Southern California - any info on the cyclist killed in bev. hills?

just saw it on the morning news, a cyclist killed by a hit and run driver in beverly hills yesterday. they showed the guy's bike and it looked like he was a serious cyclist (not that it matters). anyone know anything?
Is it just me, or have the number of cycling-related deaths increased nearly exponentially in the last few months?
I mean, when I got back into cycling last year rare were the "Cyclist dies in..." threads even in A&S. Now there seems to be two or three a day.
Completely and totally saddening.
Or, maybe my perception is just off.

this mornings story made me a little sick to my stomach seeing the bike all twisted up, the guys helmet laying in the road. what made me say he was a serious cyclist was just that it looked like a nice bike, speedplay pedals, giro helmet, etc.
i think we should do some kinda ride/gathering to show respect for him and make a statement about not letting people get away with this kind of stuff.

I think the number of cyclists has increased in the last few months with gas prices over $3/gallon for as long as they have been. I've noticed more bike commuters around here. Last year around this time I'd see almost nobody on a bike. Lately, I'll see 4 or 5 cyclists or more on my commute.
I've also noticed more motorcycles.

From my cycling club:
"I have been in contact with the Beverly Hills Police Department. They just sent me an updated press release.
The cyclist was a 23 year old male named Ilia Pankin of Los Angeles. He was hit near the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica. The driver who hit him was driving a large American SUV in a dark color. The SUV took off westbound on Wilshire and cut off on Carmelita going east and got away. BHPD is still investigating and is seeking help from the public who may have witnessed the incident.
The rider was riding alone and was either struck from behind or sideswiped. He was treated within minutes at the scene and transported to UCLA where he succumbed to his injuries."
Sad indeed. Hopefully the donkey that ran him over will succomb to his guilt and turn himself in...or get crushed by a bus.

Part of it is that every car/bike death seems to be more "newsworthy" and makes the papers, and then gets spread around the internet and A&S. Yet I heard about a serious bike/bike crash during the Amtrak Century, where the riders got airlifted to the hospital, yet it didn't make the papers.

They showed a shot of the saddle, it's a Selle San Marco. It literally made my stomach churn, and I'm used to alot of gory stuff. :(

Oh my god that is so sad. It is SO dangerous out there.

Having grown up on the Westside pretty close this intersection, I can tell you it's a bad corner. Two big, busy streets coming together..it's nasty even in a car. If the driver was heading west at sundown, he could easily have been blinded by the sun.

It seems a witness (http://midnightridazz.com/forums.php?topicId=109) saw Pankin run the red.
Let's be careful out there!

I'd like to see his cell phone log, too.
