Cafe Bustelo, brewed in a stove top esspresso maker, mixed 1/2 with evaporated milk. But here in Miami, you can get that at every Cuban restaurant or store for $1.50, so I usually don't bother.

I started drinking black coffee in college because I didn't want to keep sugar and milk around......
I started drinking black coffee when working on the ambulance because it was easier that way when we got it at the hospital late at night.

No, Im talking about filling a glass with ice, and then pouring black coffee over it. The strange part is, I dont like cool coffee, like coffee that has cooled down from hot and is now room temp. It either has to be steaming hot, or ice cold for me to drink it.

LOL I was just thinking to myself if it was considered vegan. It comes from an animal, but is doesn't seem to harm or take advantage of it in any way. Most people don't place too much importance on the waste products of another. :) But then again, one persons trash is another's treasure.

My favorite right now is Thai iced-coffee... been trying to buy the ingredients, but can't find them anywhere. Gotta go buy in bulk at a restaurant-supply place I think... anyone want to split 50-lbs of Thai iced-coffee with me?
You can't find sweetened condensed milk?
The typical thai coffee (iced or not) is just a strong coffee with sweetened condensed milk added.
If you are looking for other ingredients, then you are actually looking to make a thai coffee called 'oleng'.
And, for the post, I don't have a favorite type or brand of coffee. I just like my coffee best about 6 hours cold when I'm at work. On the weekends I like my coffee like I like my women: hot, sweet, and with a nice tan.

If you are looking for other ingredients, then you are actually looking to make a thai coffee called 'oleng'.Yeah, looks like the stuff is made from 50% coffee, 25% corn, 20% soya bean and 5% sesame. There's only one asian market in town and they don't have it... grrr... Although I don't have any problems finding the Carnation or Longevity condensed milk. I guess I'll have to make a road-trip down to the 99 Ranch Market (http://www.99ranch.com) down in LA. Those places are amazing, with tanks and tanks of live seafood, 10 different kinds of fresh shrimp, live crabs, lobster, fish, etc.. yumm.. :)
Ok, I found a recipe that a lot of restaurants use:
Thai Iced Coffee
Strong, black oliang coffee, sufficient to brew 4 cups
4 tablespoons sugar
4 tablespoons heavy cream
2 teaspoons ground cardamom
1 teaspoon almond flavoring
Crushed ice
Add the cardamom to the ground coffee, and brew the coffee. When the coffee is brewed, add the sugar and almond flavoring, mix well and then let the coffee cool to lukewarm. Fill four 12 ounce highball glasses half-way to the rim with crushed ice and then fill two-thirds full with coffee. Into each glass, stir about 1 tablespoon of heavy cream. To achieve a layered effect, hold a spoon on top of the coffee and pour the cream slowly into the spoon so that the cream floats on top of the glass over the coffee.

Dave Barry wrote a humor column on it several years back. After trying it, he said it tasted like stinky sweat socks that had been washed with a dead cat. Anyway, I've got friends who live in Indonesia (man, that name--Kopi Luwak--is very Indonesian), and they could probably get some really cheap. I'll stick with my Sumatra (pronounced sematra (the e is the schwa sound)--not soomatra--as my friends from Indonesia correct me on all of the time).

Robusta beans--I'm not paying $280/lb for something made with Robusta beans! Folgers that has been passed through a monkey's intestinal tract! Give me arabica and I might consider it.
DannoXYZ
09-21-06, 12:55 PM
Americans have fallen for the arabica marketing; most of the coffee produced and consumed in the world is robusta. The type of beans isn't as important as the roast or grind/brewing or recipe used. Supposedly the luwak's digestive system partially breaks down the bean and makes it taste smoother...

OK, I’m confused here, so bear with me...
Who was the genius who figured out that this stuff made good coffee, and what was his process for figuring out that monkey crap makes good coffee?
…hmmm, elephant crap, a bit peanutty, but not good…tiger crap, meaty, but not good…lizard crap, a little minty, but not good…monkey crap…full bodied, delicious, woohoo, that’s the one!!!!!
Can you imagine that taste test? “Sir, we are conducting a survey to see which type of animal crap tastes better, would you care to participate?”
“I’d love to, I’m always looking for a new great tasting crap.”
“OK sir, which is better, A or B?”
“B, has that full bodied crap coffee taste, I love it! A just tastes like *****.”
How is the crap harvested? Are there people who walk around in the jungle carrying laxative laced bananas and pooper scoopers? “Here monkey, monkey, monkey, I’ve got a treat for you.” Or are they raised on a monkey farm where the monkeys are kept in little cages so the crap can collect on little conveyor belts?

Here's my funny coffee story.
I tried some turkish coffee on my birthday weekend, but just made it in my press pot. It was delicious, but not the normal "turkish coffee" style.
I got a bug in my bonnet last weekend and ended up 4 bags of turkish coffee blends and an ibrik to cook it in for authentic turkish coffee.
Monday at work I was talking to a friend of mine who is a bit of a coffee conisseur, and he mentioned his favorite coffee was a brand called Peet's coffee. I looked at the website and they had some expensive stuff.
I got home and remembered that a lady I know brought me a bag of coffee when I watched her dogs a few months back. She told me it was supposed to be a good brand (so she was told...she's not a coffee drinker). I never heard of the brand, so put it away and never tried it.
I realized after talking to my friend that it was the same brand, Peet's coffee.
I tried some today at work, and OMG...this is probably one of the best tasting coffees I've ever had.
Anybody ever drink Peet's coffee?

It doesn't taste over roasted to me at all. It's over the counter some places, I think, but I've never seen it around here. It's imported from Ethiopia (where coffee was invented).
As for the chicory and cardamom....both are present in blends of the Turkish coffee I just ordered. :)

I mentioned way back somewhere, Bustello is my normal brand (simple brand that I can get at grocery store).
I don't think I've tried Melitta, but I just found out recently that they are based out of the city I live in, Clearwater, Florida.
