Classic & Vintage - I have sinned - Schwinn Premis

I have sinned :p and picked up my second (for now) steel framed bike. I emptied my pockets of $73. Rust on traps and skewers. Columbus Tanex (probably triple butted) lugged frame. 700c Weinman wheels, Suntour Cyclone 7000 RD, and gray suede saddle. I need to learn how to true wheels, service hubs and BB. Here is what it looks like with a quick bath. Notice the white brakes, white crank, white shifters, etc.

Pick up the book: "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance". Well worth the $24.95, it'll pay for itself when you perform the service you mention.......

Hey, that was my first 'real road' bike, bought used in 1991. I loved my Premis, and that white component group is pretty snazzy, if you ask me. The Tenax frame is a nice ride (I believe it was Columbus tubing that Schwinn bought the complete supply of, because it appears nowhere else excpet the Schwinn line), and the Suntour components are very nice and reliable. My index shifters never went out of adjustment, and I rode that bike up until last year (thats a good 14 years of service!). Enjoy your bike, I know I enjoyed mine.

Very nice find! The Tenax main tubes in the Premis are double-butted.

Very nice bike, and $73 ain't bad. I found one at the local used bike store that I would've killed for, but like most nice, older Schwinns I come across, it was totally not my size. I'm jealous!

What was the premis(e) for buying the bike? :roflmao: I crack myself up sometimes...(good thing since I'm probably the only one who thinks I'm funny)

I'll second the praise for that era cyclone. I also rode thousands of miles without adjustment on a 88 trek 1000 (talk about a junk frame...thin tube alum?). Those white cranks scream the 80s at me but they are interesting. Nice bike

Believe it or not the RD needs to be adjusted. I am in need of Cyclone 7000 instructions. I was hoping to get a few things adjusted and shaking her out on a short ride.

I figure I'll strip down the frame, steel wool the rust spots, hit it with some auto compound and clean it up. I have some high quality lacquer spray finish originally meant to cover brass that I thought would protect well. I don't want to try a new paint job and line the original. Now if I find a better manual than "The Bicycling Guide to Complete Bicycle Maintenance and Repair" or better yet some vids..

One of these was my first real racing bike, too. Still have it.

I found that exact bike in a 64CM frame picking it up on Thursday!!!

It's my understanding that Columbus Tenax was actually the same manufacturing run as Columbus SL but Schwinn worked a deal with Columbus to buy a load of the Columbus SL tube but bypassing the quality control and inspection processes to get a good price but obviously Columbus wouldn't let them call it SL then.
That is why no other bicycle maker had any Tenax tubing - only Schwinn.

Weird that group is white, but not the higher-level Sante group that the Circuit had that year. I have a Cyclone 9000 RD on a similar bike and it rocks.

I almost got my hands on one identical to that one, but another guy was faster with the cash than I was. Really cool looking bike.

I have a Premis frame that I hang fixed gear parts on once in awhile. It rides great IMO and is very light with the parts I have. It's also one of 4 Schwinns I have owned in the last year so I am a little biased.
A Prologue and 2 Circuits.

I love those white Cyclone 7000 groupsets. Little Darwin once traded me a set from a Premis - I hung it on my 1984 Raleigh USA Super Course:

Great deal. I bought that same frame for $100 -- just for the frame and seatpost. I built it all back up using black components. The thing rides great!

I bought one new in the same color scheme in 1990. I rode the hell out of it, even the Great Californina Land Rush...SF to LA, 430miles, in two days. The Suntour group worked flawlessly but the spoke hubs pulled through the OEM wheels. As I've eased back into racing this year, I bought a Schwinn Tempo. Seems like the same bike except for the 105 group.

I've never owned a bike made of anything besides steel. Don't want to either.

Hey tmh657, I just bought a Premis and am plotting use a fixed gear wheelset that I have lying around. Any issues that you had to work through to get your parts on the Premis?
