Bicycle Mechanics - blow out = wheel out of true?

had the rear tire slip off the rim today on the way home. found a little defect in the bead. took it to get replaced but they were out of my size, luckily i had some crappy spare kendas at home. i get everything on, spin the wheel and there's a pretty big wobble. big enough to stop the wheel on the pad with the breaks open. could the blow out have caused it?

First off, what size are you running that the shop doesn't have it??

Second. The pressure of an inflated tire will help hold the rim true somewhat. This is why they suggest that you let the air out of your tire before you true the wheel. That being said, this effect is not enough to correct for the wobble you are describing.

I have never heard of a blowout alone causing a wheel to go out of true. If you have an inexpensive single walled rim, it is possible that the flat tire allowed the rim to take a hit that could cause this. Otherwise you have a mystery. Are all the spokes okay?

i'm using forte gt2k 27 x 1 1/4, they were out of the 1 1/4's.

the wheel is an old mavic, i'm sure it's not that high grade of a wheel.
if it wasn't the blow out that caused it, the only other thing i can think of is i screwed it up when forcing the tire off and on? maybe i grabbed the wheel the wrong way?
the bike was tune just a couple of weeks ago, and the wheeld were true then.
i'm goinna ake the wheel to the LBS tonight to get it fixed, eventually i would like to learn how to true wheels myself, but i don't have money for the tools (mainly truing stand) right now....

An out-of-true wheel is usually a sign of loose spokes. You should check the rim for cracks around the spoke holes. Rim failure at the spoke holes will cause the spokes to lose tension and the wheel to go out of true.

How long were you on the bike after the blowout? Go over anything bumpy on just the rim? If so may have bent things then and wheel needs truing

I've seen rims go out of true from an explosive blowout. It usually happens when the tire bead pops off the side of the rim, and if it's an old, soft rim.

I had a very simular issue with a blowout on the exact same size tire/wheel. Not only did I knock it out of true slightly, but I also did perminate damage to the rim. A decent hop to it that can't be removed through truing. It's on my commuter, and I really don't want to put any more money into it right now, so I'm going to turn the rim into the ground or until I have more cash to throw at the problem. In any case, it's my rear rim, so hopefully I won't get thrown too badly if it goes.

So yes, explosive decompression of a tube can do some lasting out of truing / bending to a rim, esp older 27" box rims.

well i just got back from the LBS. wrench says he got as straight as he could, but the rim is bent and my hub is loose, so i'm looking at having to buy a new rear wheel :( . he was nice enough not to charge me for his time though.

it happened to me on a good wheel when i had a rear sidewall blowout on a lightweight performance tire. and i'm not talking just a little out of true either :eek: .
