Bicycle Mechanics - my first rebuild. what tools?

hey guys, i'm about to tackle my first rebuild project. i got an old univega custom ten for super cheap. i figure this makes for a good first project 'cause if i screw it up, i aint out that much $. my plan is to pull all the parts off, send the frame for powder coat, and re-assmble as a fixie/single speed.
my question is, what tools are going to be completely necessary and where can i cut corners or make tools myself? aside from a multi tool (mostly used for the allens), small set of metric wrenches and some screw drivers, i've got no tools.

For an older bike, many parts use hex rather than allen bolts. You'll also need cone wrenches for hub and headset bearings, cable cutter (a wire cutter WILL NOT work), chain whip, chain tool, crank puller (an absolutely unimprovisable tool), maybe a freewheel tool.

I have the Performance Spin Doctor Team Tool Kit ($100, has all these tools and more, except freewheel tool) and they are rebranded Lifu tools, and have worked excellently for me over the past 2 years. :) Allen bolts are the ones where the hexagonal wrench goes INTO the bolt head. Hex bolts are the ones where the hexagonal wrench goes AROUND the bolt head. Allen wrenches and bolts are smaller and lighter, and so they are used on nearly all fasteners on a modern bike.

also, what book is most reccomended for this type of job? my library doesn't have the zinn book, but i did check out the bicycle magazine maintenance book, it seemed pretty good. between that and sheldon's site i should have all the info i need, correct?

Yeah... that Lifu kit *appears* to have everything the Spin Doctor kit has EXCEPT for the T-handle and Y-handle allen wrenches, which are nice to have but you can get by with just L-shaped wrenches. It does look like a sweet deal if the tools are of the same quality as in the Spin Doctor kit, which I assume based on the fact that they're both made by Lifu. Also, the Lifu kit says it has adjustable wrench, patch kit, screwdrivers, and a lockring spanner. The lockring spanner will come in handy for working on old BBs and headsets... I used a hammer and old screwdriver for those before shelling out $15 for the Park Tool.

If you get the Lifu kit, please post your impressions of it. I would like a tool kit in a more portable case, to take on vacation and such, and would like to know if this is a good choice.

And yes, get the Bicycling Magazine book!!! That book literally changed my life :) It's only $13 and really really excellent because it's well illustrated and introductory, yet very complete.

PS- Lifu kit lacks cable cutters. But you can get those from Home Depot for $5-10. I double checked it against the Spin Doctor kit, and it really matches up well. Wow.

i'll have to wait until next pay period to order the tool kit, i just spent my allowance on a new tire and rain jacket. but when i get it i'll definetly post my impressions.
