Sorry...it's very hard to follow some of these threads because of the homespun terms for basic stuff. The web uses this term for mental disorders.... What is DSM-IV?

Diagnostic and statistic manual of mental disorders.+1 It tells you what criteria one needs to meet to be diagnosed with a specific disorder. It is not a fun read...

 I've been found out!

Well, mental health is a relative term, isn't it? :)

No, no it isn't. You are definitely crazy. It says so on page 247. ;)

Actually it is called "transient hypochondriasis" and is common among medical students. It is a persistent, unrealistic preoccupation with the possibility of having a serious disease, and comes about from reading all those medical books. 70% of medical students get this.

So keep away from a book like that. You can diagnose yourself into craziness, as well as all your friends. I used to work in the Mental Health field and my boss would diagnose the people who worked for her, especially when she set her mind on firing someone. I'm sure she had a diagnosis for me. She was evil. That's my diagnosis of her!

My wife is a RN, I truly believe she suffers from this.
But when I try to tell her she just tells me Im a Idiot.

actually, a long time ago my wife hid the medical equivalent of the DSM from me because I thought I had too many things, so... yes. I need to stay away from that one.

How about factitious disorder? A mental illness where the person pretends to have a mental illness.

That's a good one.

Granted, my experience has been limited, but from what I was able to figure out, if you try hard enough you can fit anyone into a DSM-IV diagnosis. Don't exclude yourself... :D

I don't know what it is, but here is a thought. You seem to have a bunch of terminology questions. Why not gather them up and just do one post for them all? Might be easier.

i, too, work in the mental health profession.
the dsm-4 also is used for/with insurance providers in the reimbursement arena, admission criteria; it's how we get paid!
it seems, once a person with mental illness gets diagnosed, their dx stays with them for a Long Long time, even for life!
i have heard that a DSM-5 is in the making, but is so much more symptom specific that the complexity is even more overwhelming!

It is possible that you're both right. :)

Ah yes, the DSM-IV. When I was working for the County Attorney's office handling mental commitments I became quite familiar with that beast.

I'm always amused by how many in the filed take it as gospel . . . right up to the point that you start asking them why things were in prior versions are no longer in the current version.

I understand it'll be at least another 3 or so years before they work it out.

In reality, this is the main purpose of the DSM. Psychologists and social workers need a coded disorder in order to get paid. So they have an incentive to create as many categories as possible.

P.S. I think they need a category for anyone who makes more than 6 posts a day on Bikeforums.
