Looking at a 48x34 online and I noticed that it is a 9 speed. Will that be OK on an existing 10 spd system? :o

There shouldn't be any difference between a 9-speed and a 10-speed chainring. People have even had success running 10 speeds with 8-speed chainrings.

I also have a 10 speed,and was pondering over an older 9 speed Ultegra(due to costs) on my existing 10 speed set up.A couple of dealers said it wont work that well because the chain spacings are different.
52/38 as opposed to 53/39 on 10 speed?

yup, yup, yup. 4th time this month I answered this question!!!!! SEARCH, it's a wonderful concept. 9 to 10, 10 to 9, don't matter.
