Yes. Any friction shifter will work with any rear derailer. Cable pull ratios are not an issue. Some older friction shifters, mostly stem shifters which are generally crap anyway, don't have enough range of motion to shift all the way across a modern cassette. This is basically a non-issue, since you generally aren't going to be putting cruddy shifters on a bike worth upgrading to a modern cassette.

Well I always wondered myself if a standard friction shifter pulls enough cable when used with Sram's 1:1 ratio derailleurs....I know they work with standard Sram derailleurs, just like any other brands...

This was the specific circumstance that I was wondering about -- since the 1:1 ratio derailleurs do require more cable pull... anyone with experience trying this kind of set-up?
