Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - Base miles...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

...please, discuss. I want to know more as far as target amounts, etc. I just picked up a road frame and necessary parts to see what the hype about shifters is and how these bikes just might help me improve my track performance.
Much appreciated!

I do a lot of long zone 2 on the road (including some mountains) to keep my endurance up. I get speed from intervals on the track. Those things on your handlebars are useful in the mountains (which you don't have in chicago...)

Target amounts? I just try and ride as much as I can.
Dont tell anyone, but road bikes are effing brilliant. Yes, track bikes make you strong, smooth, yadda yadda, but you can't climb or ascend on them in a training scenarios.
Just back from a 120km hill ride in high wind, hail, and persistant rain. Two flats tyres, one bowl of wedges with sour cream, one flat white (coffee), 4 seperate attempts by magpies to peck me, one successful. Best ride in a long time.
I was cleaning my bike and my little brother said 'hey, that bike has gears!'
Long road rides are good for 'base miles' as for work, I've found that I never actually cycle for more than 20 minutes at a time, and my commute is the longest continual ride of the day - 40min to work, 50min home.
Im also learning to conserve energy spent. Most of the time when I ride its 'flat out' all the way, and you just can't do that for 4 hours without doing a 'floyd'.
I'm building up a saronni with super record with friction shifters as my next road project.

bikes are fun - full stop.
Next weekend is L',eroica (vintage bike ride), then it's the C.O.P. alleycat Im running for the Prequel event to CMWC, Eddy Merckx is coming to town and doing all the exclusive dinners (which i considered forkin out for but the prequel alleycat is on), the Victorian Roller Derby champs on Sunday, and track season officially starts with the country carnivals over christmas. It's really GEARING up.
One of the track heads is having lunch with the big man. He raced and meched in Europe and knows EM from racing circles. He told me he has a photo of him between God (merckx) and Jesus (Sercu). All I need to do i find out WHERE they're having lunch ;)
