Recreational & Family - So who else has been asked this question?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The old "what are you training for?" one. If I had a $ for every time I've been asked that, I wouldn't be bothering looking for another job right now. I remember once, I was eating a greasy hamburger (not my normal choice for meals, but hey, there aint a lot at Jackadgery) 120km into a ride and I got asked this question. I felt like saying "would I be eating this if that were the case?"

Seems to be beyond the grasp of most people. They can't conceive of anything longer than the next couple of weeks (if that). I intend my life lasting just a little longer.

"what are you training for?"

Well there's this race thing over in france. They call it a tour though. We race up and down hills, across the countyside.

You should ride in street clothes. Then, the question you get asked all the time will be, "is your car in the shop?"

i am 6'3 and ride bmx/freestyle bikes. i dont get the training question, but i get the isnt that bike a little small.?

i believe that most people do not understand the joy of a bicycle and that is why we get asked stupid questions.

Chris, do you wear loud jerseys, or keep on the conservative side of the clothing spectrum? I am curious if the atire has anything to do with it.

I have never been asked that question. But I also never wear anything with loud logos on it.

i don't think i've ever been asked what i was training for. i have, however, asked myself that question many times while on 'casual' rides. i find myself striving to push it harder, trying to beat something or someone that isn't there. mantras rolling off my mind, the rhythm growing hypnotic. sometimes i've got to tell myself, "hey, chill-- and check out that view!"

Well, I usually wear cycling jerseys with bright colours for the simple reason that ordinary clothes in dark colours would be warmer and that is evil. Having said that, I'm not the only one around here who has noticed this.

I get asked all kinds of questions, everything from. What are you training for? to, Do you need some money? To, Did you get a DUI and loose your driving privliges? Why do you put yourself through that on such a cold day?
I usually just say you wouldn't understand or you would be out here with me, then I take the money they offer or take the coffee they buy me then go on my way and give a chuckle because I know they just don't get it.

After seeing me on one of my early morning rides before work last winter a neighbor asked my wife (with a suspicions tone) "What's he up to riding around in the dark?"

I thought she should have answered "He's up to 100 miles a week"

I haven't been asked the "training" question but since I ride a road bike I have been asked if I race.
No I don't race. I just enjoy riding and trying to be healthy.

Not quite the training question, but I was asked by a young woman last saturday, a rainy wet Saturday (what? rain in the Puget Sound region) "just what are you doing on a bicycle on a day like this?" , I just smiled at her and answered "peddling" and went on.

Next time I'm asked what I'm training for, I think I'll say "The rest of my life." And just leave it at that.
