Road Cycling - Pro racers and anyone whoes sponsered

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi, i was just curisou how people get sponsered by companies and what not. I dont plan on getting sponsered im just curious and what the process is. It seems so cool ... im just wondering
In other sports I have competed in you pretty much just ask the small places. As your name grows usually larger companies notice you and sometimes they approach you. Usually small business are will to sponsor you just to get a tax write-off or a tad bit more exposure. You to remember though, most times you need to give results or they will not continue to support you. Not necessarily winning, but getting there name out there.
I have had friends sponsor me since they like watching me compete so much.
A sponsorship is not necessarily a free bike, it could be your LBS just giving you a couple parts or a great deal on some stuff.
Usually you just have to ask. My friend races mini sprint cars (dirt track racing) and he is sponsored by an RV repair place and an electrical contractor. All he had to do was ask.

If just getting started, try for a team/shop deal. I rode for a team where we got whatever the shop could get at pretty much wholesale cost. Man, that was NICE!!!
alot of times, the shop will set you up at a discount on one of their big brands - IE - Cannondale, etc. what kind and how much of a discount depends on the team/shop.
Just the best way to start, IMO. Then get the results and move on from there. Worked for an old riding buddy of mine who is pro now. He made his contacts through the local USCF club and their shop's sales reps for the brand they were riding through the shop deal.
Join a cub that is sponsored. That will get you the scwag for cheap. Also, the bike community is small, and making friends with the people at various companies is key. My club is sponsored by a bike company, a sunglass company, performance food company, tire company, etc.
The team will help you build a bike that is better than you deserve (I know mine did for me). From there, race and get results. Remember that sponsorships are about marketing - giving producs away is the same as buying an ad somewhere. That means that you have to be nice, polite, energetic and otherwise someone who the company would like to have pushing their product.

Start with a shop. Not necessarily a local shop as I have sponsored in the past many riders/clubs nationwide.
One important thing is to support your sponsors and be polite.
The main reason sponsors leave is because they support you but in turn you do not support them by passing bad comments about them. Seems incredible but I see it all the time.
