For Christmas in 1973 I asked for and got a Peugeot bike. I knew nothing at the time about bicycles, but someone told me Peugeots were good. My folks bought one for around $130.00 - $150.00. I remember them complaining about how expensive bikes were.

I sold it about five years later.

Now, for some reason I am wondering what model it might have been. Does anyone have any idea what might have sold for around that price in 1973? It doesn't matter, really, but now that I'm obsessed with cycling, not knowing is bugging me. I'm not even sure I have a photo of it.

From mid-1972 to mid-1974, as a UCLA student, I worked part-time in a Peugeot/Nishiki shop.

In the US, the most popular Peugeot model by far was the UO-8, which retailed for about $125. The UE-8, which added mudguards and lights, was a bit more expensive. It is possible, but less likely, that you had a PA-10, which retailed for about $150 and had narrow-range gearing (52-45/14-21) and tubular tires. The PA-10 came in white, with black head lugs and an integral derailleur hanger. In contrast, the UO-8 came in a variety of colors, initially blue, green, and white, later red, orange, yellow, purple, and a gorgeous "champagne."

Wow, John, Thanks. I never expected such a great answer, and so quickly. My bike was blue, so it must have been the UO-8.

I really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

John, if you're still around what was the gearing on the Peugeot UO-8? I ask because it was probably typical of all 10 speeds, and I wonder what typical 10 speed ratios were back then?

Peugeot Show (http://home.wanadoo.nl/peugeotshow/) has a catalog page for the 1975 UO-8 that shows a triple chainring with 36-45-52T and a freewheel with 14-17-20-24-28T.
