Well, I had to look up your profile and see how old you were before I answered your question. Suspension stems were a big thing back in the late 80's / early 90's. They somewhat took the place of the suspension forks. Just another crazy developmental period from back in the day. They weren't all that plush, but they did take that harsh vibration out of the trail. No damping to speak of.

I think it'd be fun to buy an old crappy bike with a Girvin Crosslink fork and put a suspension stem and thudbuster seatpost on it..

It'd be stooooopid fun,eh? (and strange to ride)

Worked great, just like the ad says..............in 1995.

Though the couple guys I knew who ran them had constant problems with them. That and the whole idea of the bars moving around is one I was never very comfortable enough with to actually buy one of those things. There were actually a few companies who made similar types of suspension stems.
