Bicycle Mechanics - hubs and such

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How often do hubs need to be taken off and cleaned out/repacked or whatever they need? I ride with a kid whose bike just doesnt seem to roll very well. $300 raleigh mtb from bikeline. Honestly, it never really kept up with similarly priced treks, but I was just hoping that maybe there were some problems that could be addressed normally. He does have a service plan from bikeline, but that was the shop that told me their fitting process was watching me peddle backwards to see if it was the right size frame and if it wasn't, get the right size frame and you are ready to go.
P.S. I went with an independantly owned bike shop and got great service.
About every 5,000 miles or sooner if the hub doesn't seem to be free rolling very well or if exposed to submersion in water. Most of todays hubs are sealed so rain is not the issue it use to be.

If in doubt, overhaul them. It's not a particularly time consuming job to do. Hubs on a $300.00 bike aren't going to be sealed as securely as Ultegra or XT quality hubs.
