Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Im looking to buy my first road bike this year to use for training and local races, im 5'11'' 145 pounds. I want a bike with a decent enough spec to last me a few years if i decide to get serious about road racing. So far i have narrowed down my seach to two bikes, a cannondale R600 or the 2002 Devinci Millenium. The Devinci is about $300 more but it has a better spec. If any one has any comments about which bike would be better purchase or any other suggestions of a good bike around that price range I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Chris,
I am not a big fan of either of the bikes you listed but if you are just getting into riding I would look at the Jamis Quest. It is a real good steel bike. Only weighs 20 lbs and rides very smooth. I live in the Lake Tahoe area and rode this bike for almost two years (my first two years of road biking). We have some of the worst road conditions in california and I never had a problem with the bike. It comes with a carbon fork and Shimano equipment. You can't go wrong with this....
Here is a link to the bike:

Good luck with anything you choose.

Look used, on Road BIke REview, they have really cheap bikes, like i saw a Trek 5200 carbon full ultegra for 1500. The r600 new is around 1200, and the extra 300 is defintley worth it. !

He said he's narrowed his choices down and lemond and jamis wasnt one of them.Hell i like felt because i got one but i assume narrowed down means he's looked around.I know everybody thinks they have a great bike and a great deal but i'm the only one that got that,LOL. You cant go wrong with either so sit and ride each and decide but you might find a hell of a used bike and spend a little less and what you save use for upgrades.

the cannondale has anicer frame, in my opinion. It does however, have a crumy crank, crummy brakes, crummy wheelset and no pedals. Replacing those with 105 or ultegra spec will probably add $300 to the price, but you will have a very nice bike on your hands.

I've got to recommend against getting a Trek used. We had a couple people each with Treks and Kestrels last year in our shops. They bought them on ebay and brought them in to have us build 'em up. Only problem is that they had cracks in the frame and you can't get that warrantied as you're not the original buyer. That, and IMHO, I don't really care for the ride of carbon.
