Commuting - had a companion for a while this morning

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was riding along this morning to work and in the darkness I caught a movement on my left side in the middle of the road and when I finally looked again it was a dog and I though OH CRAP I'm gonna get nipped but all this little guy wanted was some excercise he kept my pace for about 2 or 3 blocks when I slowed down so did he and when I sped up he did too. It was really funny but he looked like he was having a blast I know I was and when I stopped at the intersection to make a right he looked around as if to say " Ok dude that was fun see ya around" and took off , funniest thing that has happened to me since I started commuting

What kind of dog? Did it look like a pet?

Man. I'll have to let my dog (one of 'em, not the mellow guy in my avatar) out the front door more often (back yard's fenced). Maybe you could swing by? :D

My wife and I take our dogs biking with us (I've seen other riders mention Springers (http://springerusa.com/) before, best invention since, well, um, bikes) and that's the most fun I have on two wheels. My little mutts LOVE running at biking speed (guys can keep up a 15 mph pace for quite a few blocks), but then after a while they do start to tire. I can usually take them for about 5 miles though, all said and done. The active one once did about 13 miles in around an hour. I'm planning on getting a used Burley soon to act as a "sag waggon". That way the wife and I can get in a few more miles at a time and bring our "kids" along. Cats stay home and house sit.

My hyper-spasmatic part-border collie mutt has CADHD (canine attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, my term), but when he's hooked up to my seat post, he's FOCUSED. Like I said, he LOVES to run at bike speed.

I had an experience like that on a tour with my boyfriend: a bored farm doggie got all happy to see some people and ran alongside our bikes for a while. Problem is, it was a bit dumb, almost got under a front wheel a couple of times. In fact, I'm surprised it didn't get run over long time ago! We tried to yell at it and pretend we're hurling stones, we even kicked it (gently :) - neither of us is capable of seriously kicking a living creature except in self-defence, I'm afraid) - didn't work. It was kind of fun though, in a way; nice to have a companion.

He's part working dog, partially bred for a purpose. You're giving him a job. Unemployed working dogs are the spazziest of them all.

Yeah he had to be someones pet cause it was about 5:00 am just about the time people are getting up and letting the dog out. He was an all black dog and had a what looked like what I would call a short mane and kind of a pointy snout probably about mid shin on me height about 25 or 30 lbs I would say, he was really cute and looked like someone either runs with him or bikes with him. He had this wonderful joyful look on his face like I have never seen on a dog it was cool. Hope to see him again (NOTE) I just did some searching on dog breeds and this dog looked like a Shipirke (sp) but bigger than the standards the site stated.

I thought it was funny.

Yeah, I know. Thing is, this sweet little nut has almost NO attention span when trying to get him to do a job. We try certain agility tricks and such, and he just won't pay much attention or figure things out well. I throw a frisbee and he leaps AS I throw it, and lands by the time it sails over his head. EVERY TIME!

That's why we like the Springer (see my last post for link) attachment for our bikes so much. He's absolutely THRILLED to go with us, and he stays right on task the whole time.

In fact, to bring in relevancy, I've even thought half-seriously about bringing him on my commute with me 'cause he'd be tired by the time we got there, sleep all day, then get tired all over coming home! :D

Dogs love to give chase, even for fun.

I have this route I call 7 mile dirt that has seven miles of skinny tire friendly dirt road on it. Total mileage for this route is 45 miles.

Once while riding this route a giant golden retriever started lopeing beside me like you say "having a blast". After about 15 miles from picking up this dog I stop at this country store and the dog lays down tongue hanging out his mouth. I leave and the dog starts out after me then just sits down in the middle of the road as if to say "I've had enough". Funny dog. Maybe he made it back home again.

You know how those "country" dogs are...

I've got 3 dogs that like to chase me. It happens every morning and every evening when I return. They sit and wait for me. I think it's the highlight of their day really. The don't get on the road at all, just run along side me in the grass until they get tired. I don't mind and I try to encourage them by meowing at them so they'll run faster. :D I've had wood chucks run beside me as well, but they usually get scared and turn into the woods. Had a horse run along side a couple weeks ago. It was in a fenced field. It looked like it was having a great time. Animals are great!
