I'm thinking of a 40 or so inch, obviously HD and widescreen.

CRT? They don't even make those that bag.
I'd go with DLP for anything over 50", since it's a lot cheaper and they're only 16" thick or so (compared to about 4-5 for a flat panel).
For 40, stick with plasma or LCD.

plasma will have superior viewing angles to dlp. crt is old school

Philips has or had a CRT 36inch. I've got one. Fantastic on HD widescreen. I haven't left the house in months. ;) I've also had it back for a repair once. Haven't had much luck with Philips of late:(
36 inch is likely the biggest you'll get in CRT. A good CRT will pwn almost anything else for the money picture wise and generally can be repaired if they crap themselves, which isn't always the case with plasma. The big ones also weigh a friggin ton and most of the manufactuers are going away from them.

Believe it or not, my DLP is actually brigther than my old sony trinitron CRT. The only thing is that the sony seems to have slightly better contrast and more neutral/natural colors while my dlp is more saturated.
The picture looks incredible when you're sitting in front of or 2-3 ft to the left and right of the tv but from like, diagonally across the room, it gets pretty dim. Where it's horrible is vertically, it's only like 20 degrees, so if you're sitting down, it looks amazing, when you stand up, you can see it fade noticeably. But then again, I don't usually watch tv and movies standing up like an idiot.
