while doing something non-bike related, and now riding a bike (or anything else requiring the knee to flex) is exceedingly painful.
Now, obviously, I still need to ride my bike, so I've got to set it up in a way that will be optimal until the swelling goes down.
I'm thinking I should remove both crankarms, and then put the right side crank on the left. Leave nothing attached on the right so that my right leg can hang limp without obstruction. Flip rear wheel and use left-hand drive with left leg only, with the fixedgearness rotating the pedal into place for each downstroke.
Any other suggestions?

It's already been examined by medical and any alternative to biking is worse.
Come on, you can do better than that.

Remove crankset and bottom bracket.
Weld second bottom bracket shell toward front of top tube. Install bottom bracket, cranks and pedals, as well as longer-than-usual chain. Pedal with hands.
Maybe add some sort of floorboards to rest your feet on.
Don't get caught in the chain.
I would probably go clipless and wear MTB shoes on my hands.
Also, the handlebar will be unnecesary.

Do whatever you feel happiest doing, b/c nothing anybody says here will make you happy unless it agrees with what you want to do.

Rest it up and take the bus for where you have to go? Stressing an already bad knee is asking for surgery/no more riding bike forever.

Ride your bike.
If you have to, yeah. Do you need to ride? Or do you just want to?

There's a funny BB that allows the crank arms to rotate independently, isn't there? It's for improving coordination or something.
You could confuse the **** out of everyone by pedaling with your left leg (yeah, left side drive, too) and resting your right extended on the pedal.
