Maybe the pin that is used to hold the rim together prior to welding? Take the wheel off the bike & shake it around. Any noise? If so remove tire, look at seam, 2 punch marks. Hammer + center punch, hit it. Also check the bearings, tick tick tick? Overhaul.

The pins on the older mavics have a rep for coming loose.

If these don't help post more info.

Also how is the spoke tension & how old is the wheel? Spoke fretting and loose spokes might cause this.

Check if the flange is broken in the line of the spoke holes. If the flange is broken over there, spokes rub on each other and make this noise. This stuff happned to me on a Campagnolo rear road hub. The sound is there always on the same spot of the wheel and only shows up under heavy loads.

Aren't those the hubs that are unsafe for road use?

Aren't those the hubs that are unsafe for road use?I've been riding them on the road for many years, no problem.
