Hello,
Abot a week back I wrote that I biked 51 miles in 18.6 mph. I went out I would say 4 times since then never going over 27.

Today, I awoke with the goal of biking 70 miles. I got out of bed a little l;ate and feared the heat. It wasa still hazy so I went on the way after I had come powdered drink to fuel me. About 15 minutes in I was being passed by a 6 member paceline. I joined since I have no experience. I did about 14 miles with them. They gave me a pardon on taking the front seeing as they new it was faster than I was riding and the fact that I was doing a 70 today.

All the rest of the miles were true by myself miles. I think that I hit about 20 medium hills and 5 large long hills(Have to love the New England area). After a while they were getting tough.

I felt that I ate and drank ok. Not the best but very good compared to other rides. I'm still learning and this is only my 3rd ribe over 27 miles.

I finished the ride in 3:38:30 at 19.27 average. Te 50 was 18.6. So, I'm picking up the pace here. I ended it and was realy tired. Now I want to sleep a bit.

What can I do to lower the pace? I want to do a century real soon but I would like to feel good from 70 - 100. I like to keep rpm between 84 - 90. I just give myself the gear that will do the trick.

Any suggestions? Am I trying too hard too fast in teh riding. This ride put me at 450 for the year and this is the first year on a road bike.

Thanks for the help......

Did you enjoy the ride?

I've never understood the competitive spirit, so I can't be of any use for answering your specific questions--but I wonder if a more relaxed approach might not automatically solve some of the seeming problems.

Still, I do understand that there are those, in cycling as elsewhere, who are completely goal-oriented. Please know that I have no quarrel with that spirit--it's just something totally foreign to my nature! :)

Good luck, and good riding....

It may be. I'm going to join a local bike club. Right now, I bike alone. Just got into it and I do not know anyone. My brother in law rides but he is usually slow and is good for only 15 - 25 miles. I do notice that I enjoy biking in company.

Another thing is the roads that I can bike in the area without having to drive to are not the best viewing roads.

I'll see what comes of the club. I bet they can point me to some nice roads with great voews.

dmaclaren,
Right now my advice to you is to enjoy the ride. I would not concentrate to much on the details. When you do a century you need to go at your own pace. The only way to lower it is to keep riding.
Setting detailed goals this early in could lead to disappointment, and that would ruin the whole enjoyment of cycling. Just have fun!

Keep us informed! If you can't find some great scenery in Massachusetts, I don't know where you'll find it. Good luck!
