my girlfriend and i were riding home from a friends house late last night, in a stretch between the suburbs/ west end and the inner city where i live, when we got egged by some ****ing kids in a car. **** that ****. stung like a mother****er. i unclipped, threw my bike from under me, ran to fight them, and they ****ing drove away. WTF!? who does that? at least have the decency to face me and take what you have coming! to anyone thinking of coming to allentown, PA.... DON'T.

You'd stab someone over an egg?

Need to get a plate number next time.. see who's laughing then. Teens clean up real quick when parents get involved. That is, unless they had the brains to cover it up.

i'd stab someone for ice cream.
i'd sever their head clean from their body over an egg.

Challenge you? What the **** man, it's idiot teenagers acting completely normally. Try not to catch any 2nd degree murder charges in the near future. Your gf will be pissed.

one night i was walking through the city when out of nowhere an ice cream cone comes wizzing past my head, and smashes on the building right next to me. instantly i got pissed off, wondering who's gonna disrespect me like that. so i turn and see a car full of 20something thugged out looking black dudes. then i just wondered why the **** they were riding around eating ice cream cones.
that's a true story.

no, you're right, i would not have stabbed ANYONE for throwing something at me. a brick.... eh, maybe. but i WOULD have taken their car keys, wallets, and shoes. nothing says "you got served, b*tch!" like taking another mans shoes. booyah.

I wonder how it would work to carry some of those mini binoculars in your pocket so when a car tries to make a quick getaway you can stop & still get the digits?
Reminds me of an incident that happened earlier this year. Just .5 miles from home on my commute from work a group of teens pulled up next to me & yelled get on the sidewalk. I yelled thankyou, waved & smiled at them. They pulled ahead & turned right, then right again onto a dead end side street. I turned right onto my street & headed up the block home. They turned around & drove up my street, saw me in going up my driveway & honked & yelled again. I turned & looked at them as they passed. My wife had let my dog outside so I went & took her off of the tie out & took her to the front lawn. I also took my pepper spray, lock blade knife & handle bar sports camera with me. These clowns went by again & kept doing this. I was taking pictures of them & motioning for them to come on & fight if that's what they want. My dog, who won't hurt a fly, but they didn't know that, kept watching them too. She would bark everytime they yelled something. I would make the motion of opening my arms with the knife in one hand & the pepper spray in the other walking toward the street yelling at them to come on, let's do this with my dog right by my side everytime they drove by. They made the wise decision to not stop to get out of their car & take me on. I didn't care how old they were, they were threatening me & I was going to defend myself any way possible.
So far I've been hit with a Boston Creme Doughnut and a d-cell battery. The doughnut kinda pissed me off; creme all over my camelbak. The D-cell hurt! It passed through my frame and smoked me on the inside of my right calf. These missles both came from cars, and both time I failed to catch the little teenage twats what did it.

Yes, several states have passed laws enforcing the death penalty for throwing an egg at someone.

I was egged some years ago. The broken shell cut me on the left leg. The eggs were tossed by some white trashers in a battered old Ford. My Reaction was about the same as your own. I was so angry, I growled at them and dared them to come back here. Nope, they kept going, with the egg-thrower giving me the finger and a death look from the passenger window. These were not teenagers either. These wastebags were probably in their late 20's to early 30's.
To answer your question, "Who does that?", my answer is "all-american cowards".
This happened before cell phones became standard equipment for everyone, so I called police from a pay phone. A motorcycle officer arrived in a few minutes, but I had no license number to give him. While he was talking to me, he received another call, saying that an elderly man had been struck by eggs from a passing car.
Great country we have, isn't it? To think there are people who can afford to buy eggs, coffee, Mickey D's food, and ice cream cones, then throw them at people, because it makes them feel tough.
Does this happen in places such as Holland, Germany, or Switzerland?

I have had soda bottles thrown at me. Fruit. Worst I think is when some kids passed me slow enough to spit at me. Hit me on my knee. Then they took off. But, nothing is worse than a motorist swerving at a cyclist attempting to push him off the road. That happened to me once. But that person appeared to be an 'adult.' That as far as I am concerned is attempted murder.
I was whipped from a car once! it was either a whip or an antenna or something, right across my back! man, it hurt.

Apparently, the latest fad in some parts of Europe is to film a friend sneaking up and slapping someone very hard, then running away.
And if you did catch them, what would you do to them?
Give them a talking to, like the teen clowns I did catch on another occasion. This groups of twits tried the "force the biker off the road" trick. Idiots did it in heavy traffic and laughed their butts off as they drove away. They changed their tune pretty quick when the scary man in the bellaclava and ski goggles came up to the drivers window at the next light.:D
I gotta admit, the goggles and bellaclava are my favourite part of winter cycling. The reactions of people in the cars are great. You just have to remember to take that gear off when you go into the bank.

Reminds me of the last day of middle school when I got sprayed with bottled and aged piss by guys from the high school. They had a crappy K car which I threw a brick through the rear windshield of. Then I ran for it. I probably would have gotten quite the ass wooping had the cops not shown up.
I caught the kids that egged my car as I was driving down Murrieta Blvd in Livermore back in the 80's. Got one to confess and walked her to her parents house about a block away. Where she promptly changed her story and lied about the egging. Her mother declared that her baby wouldn't egg a car and wouldn't lie about it. Pissed me off. Unfortunately, for them, they gave me their name. I looked it up in the phone book.
For the next six months, about twice a week, my alarm would go off at three am. I would then call the house and tell them what I thought about them and their daughter. Eventually, they had their phone number changed and unlisted.
Of course, this was the days before caller ID.

i've had a bunch of things thrown at me while riding. five or six years ago i got hit with a brick from an SUV.
i don't recommend that.
last night drunk ******* tried spitting on me... but ended up drooling all over himself instead.
and last halloween some friends and i got eggs thrown at us by several cars full of college kids. one car got their taillight smacked with a bike lock, which was pretty exciting.
later that night, my friend gave another carload of egg-throwers a giant (door-breaking) dent in the side of their new ride. that was awesome.
then they got pulled over and ticketed by the cops.
that was also awesome.
yeah.

The only time I have ever had anything thrown at me was in Michigan. Only an almost finished cup of soda/coke. Got a bit sticky, but that was all. Never had anything else here in Canada or in South Africa.

A little knife is no good when there is more of them than you. Hell, it isn't even that great one on one. Hate to admit it, if I was in the car it wouldn't have been eggs, more likely a warm yellow liquid in a cup :o I've grown up now though, eggs are much easier to aim. Ok, I don't really do that anymore, but those were some crazy times, especially with the pumpkins. We usually didn't care to hit people, we didn't want to hurt anybody, so convertibles were fair game :D We were nice *******s.

Oh, I don't know. Something new or creative. I don't mean a wallet full of cash or a Dura Ace groupo. Just something you wouldn't ordinarily expect to be thrown at a person. Okay, fine china. People have thrown plates at fights in the home. But has anyone ever thrown a complete set of Bopla plates at a cyclist? No, of course not. But that would be interesting to see a set smash to pieces right in front of me during my commute. Something like that. I mean if people are going to throw something at me, at least they could put some immagination into it. A stuffed marlin once in a while would help break the monotany. Something from the Franklin Mint would be nice too. But no, it's always a soda bottle or can or an egg or fire crackers or those dam pine tree air fresheners. It's so cliche! These people are so selfish. I mean do they have to bore me while beaning me with some object? Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one putting in any effort out there.

man, if i coulda caught that f@#$%r i woulda killed it slowly. :p
seriously though, as quick as i am to find myself in a full-on killing rage when someone yells at me (my fave so far has to be the woman who called me a "stupid cracker"), i am extremely conscious of how much it would suck to get put in the hospital (or worse) over some dumb s%#t like that.
it took me a lot of years to get that paranoid about other people, but i assure you it's not an unfounded paranoia.
on the other hand, if you actually can catch up with these idiots and smack them, more power to ya. :D

And if the knife is any kind of folding knife no matter what locking system it uses to lock open it will fail with a lot of force on it and cut your fingers.

I had rocks thrown at me in several locations on my world tour, but the vast majority missed. In the US I did get splashed one day with cold ice---worse things have happened. I had some yucky pampers tossed at me once.
The best was on California highway 101, where I got mooned by some big fat-assed lady in the passenger seat of a van.
I agree it can be tempting to retaliate, but I prefer to fight back when the odds are better.

Funny enough, I had exactly the same experience as the OP.
My gf is a Harry Potter fanatic, we cycled into city centre late in the evening for the release of the last book (it was a midnight release). Good fun in there actually :)
Anyway, heading home around 1am (light up like xmas trees) we had a small car slow down as it passed us, heard something splatter nearby, realised it was an egg and heard kids laughing as they accelerated away.
When I got home 5 mins later I called the cops and reported it - apparently they had been reported elsewhere too. I never found out what happened after that, but I'm glad it didn't hit my gf.

Surprises me that not one of the "tough-talk" folks here on C&V have attempted to devised some form of portable, spring-loaded object (egg?) launcher ( with some PVC pipe and a spring from Ace Hardware) to use in such situations...
Take care,
-Kurt
I've said this before, but:
Who the hell drives around with raw eggs in their car?
You can bet you weren't the only target that night. They were going egging. You were one of many egg victims on their rampage. Nothing personal, and nothing against cyclists necessarily.

wrong. my columbia river knife and tool co. knife is double locking. i've cut down small trees with it on survival treks. very few people argue with a knife, either. especially not rich little ****s with enough $$$ to spend it on food to throw.

When I got something thrown at me recently, by the time I realized what had actually happened the car was 100m away. Good luck with that knife.
Admittedly, looking back at it now, it was kind of extreme. My ex-wife thought I was nuts. But, that woman's attitude and lack of accepting responsibility really set me off.
I've often wondered about the girl though. She must have been between 12 and 14. I wonder if she learned that the prank and getting caught wasn't worth it, or did the mom erase all that and she turned into a drug addict.

I don't mean a choping motion I mean accidentally pushing the wrong way towards you and closing it. And your right, few people will argue with it, from that point of view it can be a deterrent. But it's not great for self defense if a lunatic does decide to argue. You have to be up close and personal and act like a badger. You have to risk great injury to your self.
Which knife do you have?

The small u-lock in the back pocket seems to be the best relief of rage if you can execute it properly, as far as the knife goes, for it to close on your fingers just means you are holding it wrong. What you need to do is hold the knife in your fist with the blade coming from the bottom of your hand and just swing your arm as if you were punching but the only difference is your fist is far sharper this way. I personnally would just get a plate number

Does this happen in places such as Holland, Germany, or Switzerland?
You don't know what did happen in Germany or what Germans did throughout Europe, while the Swiss made merry and were neutral on such issues? Theo Van Gogh was murdered in Holland while bicycling.
