Training & Nutrition - morning/ evening HR aves

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Here's an observation I found to be unusual.
I recently bought a Timex HRM and been watching my rates and how they differ for different rides and different efforts.
I've noticed my morning commutes average a HR about 10 BPM higher than my evening commutes for the same perceived effort (gearing/speed/time).
I find that a little odd.

So did I, so i stopped training in the AM. :)

Do you drink coffee?

Yeah, but I don't think a coffee would make much of a difference in an average heart rate during a ride.
I could see it rising my rate after I get out of bed and read the paper, but that wouldn't be the same as riding to work. My rate would be higher later in the day than in the morning anyway with all that I'm doing.
The coming home commute certainly, seems at least (and maybe) more challenging as the morning commute, but my heart rate is much lower.

Coffee does strange things to your heart, and it is quite measurable. Just ask a bored RN working the overnight shift.
There are lots of hormonal fluctuations throughout the day, as well as yoru circadian rythyms. Overall there are probably so many variables that it would be hard to pinpoint.

I agree, and it's not that I discount that. I even measured it this morning and the coffee did raise my rate by 10 beats, but I don't think when I start riding that the coffee is going to be affecting my heart by an extra 10 beats per minute during my ride when my riding is raising my rate by 2 to 3 times my resting rate.
I should put my chest strap on an hour before I go home, because I'm sure my rate is going to be at least that of that rate I have in the morning after my coffee.

Everyone's at least a little dehydrated first thing in the morning. That can raise your exercising heart rate.
Try drinking 20 oz. at least one hour before your morning ride.

Good idea.
I know I feel a little guilty by just drinking a diuretic in the morning when I should be drinking water, so I'll give it a go.

Gave it a try and the water didn't make a difference, except I had to pee more when I got to work.
Put my sensor on an hour before I left work too and found my rate is higher for that time than when I leave in the morning after my coffee.
I'm think I might agree with !!Comatoa$ted and put it down to my circadian rythyms and hormonal fluctuations .
Bummer, because my route and the traffic is much better in the evening for pushing my heart rate, but it's always about 10 beats below my morning rates.
