Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - using a touring bike as a knock around bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am tall (6'5") and heavy (240#). I have been playing around fixing up bikes recently, and am wondering whether the following idea makes any sense: I would like to find an older touring bike to use as my bomber for the weekend rides. I have trouble not feeling cramped on a bike and think maybe one that is stretched out some would be helpful. Comments? J

I'm 6'5" and I bought a used Trek 520 when I weighed 240lbs. It had a cro-molly frame with a triple crank set and 105 shimano components. With 700 X 28 or 32 tires I really zipped around on the thing.
I got hooked on road bikes riding it.
That's what I'd like to do - go for it!
