Mountain Biking - winter biking pants

What do you guys wear to ride in in the winter? Most any pants are too loose and would get caught in the chainrings.

From REI, EMS, or whatever outdoor place you have close by: get some looser fit poly pro xc ski pants. They work great, wear well, and you can still layer them with other stuff.

Otherwise, get some leg or knee warmers and use them with your regular shorts. You can get standard weight stuff, or there are several variations of thicker wieghts/wind and waterproof ones. Don't forget the warm socks. Depending on how cold/wet things are for you, plenty of layers, and something to block the wind and wet might be a smart idea.

I've got some of both; nice to have plenty of options when things get wintery. Front range weather can be highly unpredictable, and having the ability to add or remove layers mid ride is a good thing.

+1 on the Cross Country ski pants. I have a pair that have a wind treatment on the front and have worn them XC skiing at -15C and felt fine. I've also worn them for XC mtb'ing at +10C and felt fine as well.

I use a pair of Polartec stretch fleece pants, they fit snug and are super warm. Mine are from EMS, but Pearl makes pants that are fleecy inside and the fronts are windproof. Those would be sweet, I think they are the "Amfib" pant or something.

Jeans are the worst thing you can wear on a bike anytime of the year. Aside from comfort issues, once wet, cotton does not insulate.. cotton kills.

Pearl Izumi bib tights. No flapping, nothing to catch on stuff. Nice and warm too.

Im wear some Champion C9 tights from Target. since off roading is more crash possible I cant see wearing expensive pants.
if the temp is below freezing by a bunch I will wear a second pair

I have a pair of Canari winter tights. Those things worked like a champ last winter.

Something along this line, when it's below 50 degrees.
Below 30 degrees, and I add polypropylene undies...

In the winter I wear Jeans. Don't have to worry about them getting caught on the chainring cause I use a bashgaurd.

Under Armor cold gear leggings and mock turtleneck. The leggings are full length and I wear them under some baggy cargo shorts. The mock turtleneck has long sleeves and I usually wear a T-shirt over that and if it's really cold I'll wear a Dri Fit tee under the Under Armor. Since cold gear is a compression fit it doesn't flap around and snag on stuff. I've had my stuff for about two years and it's good stuff.

Another vote for the XC ski pants with the wind-panel front. ACcually, if you look closely at the REI Headwind pants, the cycling and XC ski ones are nearly identical. I just wear a pair of REI cycling briefs under them.

I wear Pearl bib tights with the fleece on the inside, smartwool socks (thin & warm), Pearl shoe covers (on & off road). Did several rides in the 20's last year and was perfect.

Any old pants... rubberband around the right ankle..
