Triathlon - Importance of TT seat angle and Aero frame?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How important, really, is the seat angle of a 76 degree TT/Tri bike vs the traditional 73 found on roads? Do aero frames make a huge difference as well? Any resources on this matter would be much appreciated. =)

I've been debating over a new Cervélo Soloist Team (http://www.cervelo.com/bikes.aspx?bike=SLT2006) and BMC Streetfire SSX (http://www.bmc-cycling.com/streetfire.html) for quite a while and can't bring myself to pick one over the other.

The bike I choose will mostly be used for RR and Crit racing, with the occasional TT and tri thrown in here or there. To be honest, maybe only 1-2 tris and 10 or so TT per year. I'd possibly have a set of Zipp 404s to use with the bike during TT/Tri.

Given my low tri/tt situation, what would make more sense to buy? Both bikes will end up costing me the same amount of money, and will have the same Ultegra groupsets minus the FSA crank/bb that comes stock on the Soloist.

my personal thought is that it is not too important.

What is important is finding a comfortable aero position. For me, that means moving the seat forward compared to normal riding position.

I have had no problem doing this on my two road bikes. Frame geometry is not important, riding geometry is. Your frame is nothing more than a tool to hold your bike parts together. You can move your seat and handlebars to make the position you want.

you answered your own question. You are using the bike for RR mainly so get a RR bike and strap a set of clip-ons and an aero helmet on for the TT's and you will not be loosing hardly anything.
