Recreational & Family - aero bars on hybrid/fitness bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First let me say that I am new to these forums and just a tad ignorant on the finer points of cycling so bear with me.
I love riding on hybrid/fitness type bikes (might consider a cyclocross) because of comfort and visability. I do like a little more speed than a typical comfort bike but speed is not my priority. 90% of the time I really enjoy the upright position. The other 10% is when I'm going into the wind. A strong headwind takes a lot of the fun out of my ride. Is there any reason, ie geometry, why one cannot put clip-on aero bars on a fitness bike for those times when I get caught in a strong headwind?

I don't see why not; it may look a little weird and it will be a bit harder to steer. I'd check with your local bike shop and see what they think. They may let you try a pair on your bike for a test ride.

Thanks b. Actually, after talking the the local shop they informed me that this practice is becoming more common place on both hybrids and touring bikes. It's used for aerodynamics into the wind but also to stretch out and relax in a new position for awhile.
Steering at a slower speed is the drawback, as you suggested.
I'm about to do the same. Just don't use them in group riding (pacelines). Bad idea !
I had a set of airstrykes on a Raleigh C-40 for a long time. It made the bike a lot more comfortable.
I see more and more hybrids with aero-bars everyday.

The only draw back that I can see it that getting to the brakes quickly may be problematic, other than that, its your bike, enjoy it! :) I've also considered this, but I added Newk bar ends that had drops so that helped...still, getting to the brakes quickly can be an issue.

I've got aero bars on my hybrid... I agree with the above statements, adds some comfort and takes away from fast braking. but, it's worth it for me.

I just bought a Giant Dash 3 and would love to put aero bars on it for another riding position. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on what kind to look in to?
Used aerobars on a MTB commuter. Used to strap a backpack to them with change of clothes at the start of the week.
Worked perfectly well until I tried to bunny hop a fallen branch one weekend with the same setup. The bars must have been pretty cheap because it was the impact with my knee that broke them. Knee bruised :injured:ish but fine.
