I hate it myself unless I am sending it from yahoo messenger and can use a regular keyboard...

I generally text message with one friend of mine. Every Wednesday I can expect a message saying U ridin' 2nite. I then reply. That is pretty much all the texting I do.

Every now and then I'll crap out a one-liner, send it to a couple friends and see who responds. For actual communication, I'll avoid it. Though sometimes it comes in handy.

Yeah, but not too often. I do have friends that text me from their computers.

One thing I like about Nextel is that I can text from their web site. Why is this nice? Because I can set it to deliver the message anytime in the next 6 months. I sometimes use it to set reminders.

I'll text when I don't feel like talking to someone, like my girlfriend. I'm not alone on is, my friend will text his girlfriend when he doesn't feel like having his ear talked off for 10 minutes when all he wanted to say is "Hi"

I do very little of it. Mainly back and forth with my two college kids, pretty good to cc them with:p We have guys at work that are addicted to their Crackberry's...not me, I don't want one. Want to send me an email, fine I will read it when I get the time. Want to call me, fine I will talk if I have the time. TM? I usually won't bother to answer:D

yeah I do --it's great in a crowded/busy place (club, hockey game, etc), and also great to just send off little one liners that don't quite need a whole phone conversation. Like where we're meeting for happy hour. I get a little annoyed when three or four go back and forth and turns into a conversation better handled (and faster) with a phone call.

And it's great to ping someone you haven't spoken to in a while, or don't know very well (but want to) ;)

Ive never sent a text message, I rarely use the phone at all, but occationally, ill get a text message from somebody, thinking im somebody else. Usually, its an international one. Very irritating that I have to pay for every text message somebody sends to me, when they got the wrong number, especially internationaly ones. Next time Im going to have that text messaging turned off on my phone, when I renew my contract. I hope they can turn off the internet thing on my phone too. I accidently pushed the wrong button, and got charged for that too. Dont need all that photo stuff either.

I got a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard (blackberry), but have only sent maybe 3 text messages in 4 or 5 months that I've had it.

Texting is very popular in Europe due to the high cost of telecommunications.

For example, I get about 120 minutes a month on my mobile plan for around $16. I can send a text massage that has the same basic info of a minute conversation of about $0.05

In America where you get a gazillion minutes of talk time every month for $20 or whatever it doesn't make much sense, but in Europe we love it.

I miss the days when people called you at home or at work on a regular land line. If you weren't there, then they would call you back or leave a message. I hated pagers and I hate cell phones. I don't even like answering machines.

i have a fairly intense phobia of phones. i really don't enjoy using them, can't put my finger on why. i actually get nervous whenever the phone rings and my heart rate jumps a bit just before i answer it.

No, nor do I MySpace, (these two things are actually numbers one and two respectively on "Kris Pistofferson's List of Most Vacuous Things To Do in The Waiting Room of Mortality," or K.P.L.O.M.V.T.T.D.I.T.W.R.O.M. for short.)

Ironically enough I am posting this in "Foo," which is #9.

not at all...while text message can be a cute way to say hello,it also annoys me and if this post can enlighten some people who are stupid enough to put people's life in jerperdie and still use thier cell phones while driving then something good came out of making what it appeared at the start to be an useless thread.

I text message all the time. And now that I got my first Crackberry it's become more intense. It helps me to free my mind while being stuck in front of a computer all day. That way the boss can't tell if I'm sending messages either.

I was once driving somewhere with someone and that someone texted back and forth with another person for the better part of an hour. It drove me bat-**** insane for some reason. Every other minute: *flips open phone, types away at the keypad, flips phone closed* *repeat*

More than anything, I wanted to snatch the phone from her hand and toss it out the window onto the freeway.

I saw an idiot the other day that not only was text messaging while driving, but he also had a laptop up and running (no, not a cop). Oh for the good old days when you could actually carry a rocket launcher around.

Not exactly a "texter" my self, i rather call someone than take for ever typing a message. It is quite popular for teenagers and young adults.

I guess I just don't get the whole text messaging thing, especially just to say "hi". And if you're simply trying to convey a short message like "I'll be home by 7:00 p.m.", can't you just call and say that? Do you have to turn that one message into a ten minute telephone conversation?

Text messaging is very common in China since it's cheaper than calling, but I try to do it as discreetly as possible (my phone only vibrates, it doesn't ring). I disagree with the prevailing opinion that a text message has to be answered immediately -- if I'm in a conversation with someone in real life, the text message can wait. That said, I do it often enough that I can actually touch-type on my phone's standard keypad.

Same here in Japan. Most people use email on their mobiles. Either that or play games. I use email with most of my clients, cmail (similar / same as text) with family and sometimes actually call family and friends.

i think a text message entitles me to answer it whenever i want. as far as priorities go, it usually goes like this: face to face, phone calls, emails, and then text messages. they're definitely at the bottom of the "importance chain".

Makes it very easy to text, so I find myself sending a few more, esp. to people that may be in a meeting, etc. and unable to take a regular call.

I try not to. If someone wants to talk, just call me. I like having it for times when I need a phone number or address and don't have something to write it down on. I don't like that my carrier charges me for texts I send AND receive.

for the equivalent of about $10 a month I can text message between south america, europe and north america. Its very handy for both business and personal, my next cel phone will have a text keypad. Its only for short messages, brilliant target marketing for a generation that really can't communicate in complete sentences:p
