Hey all

I'm trying to pick up parts to start building a fixed gear and was wondering if anyone has any advice about where to go. I'm from Seattle and so far have been lucky having my buddies from there mail / bring me parts. They know more about all this than I and I trust their judgement.

I haven't had much luck finding shops around here that I dig, but also think it's important to have a local shop. What do you all think, how much better is it to buy in person? Or does it not really matter?

Thanks everyone, Steph

Thanks Everyone, those are great suggestions. How many are used parts, or known for deals? I don't have a huge budget and, well, also expect to make a lot of mistakes and would love to keep the prices low until I figure out what the hell I'm doing.

Oh, and to Shishi, I'm living in Bklyn Heights at the moment with some family friends, but hoping to move north, prob Williamsburg.

Welcome to NY! In terms of finding your very own LBS, that's such a matter of personality and choice, you probably should visit all of these until you hit it off with one, but since you're looking for parts for your project you might check this out. NYCBikes in Williamsburg is having some kind of warehouse sale this weekend--you can see their deals here:

I think there's some kind of party ride or pub crawl thingy associated with it.

The guy who owns the place helped me with my first conversion and I'm loving how it turned out.

Good luck and throw some pics up when you get somewhere on it!

I've seen these guys hatin' on this shop before. I dunno I've been in there and never had anything but good vibes. I like Richard, he's the Manager or something...ask for him if you go. Welcome to Brooklyn anyway.

Jeez - who lives in Brooklyn? Nobody but losers and poor people.
Everyone knows that all the most fashionable bike shops are on the island.
Just ask New York magazine, they know.

Topping off an old post, but I visited B's Bikes for the first time today. The staff was very kind and helpful. They were helping all sorts of local hipsters out with their sunday cruising bikes, filling up people's tires as they came by. A very nice operation...plus they sell used.
