So we tried a new route this weekend Sunday: from Whittier Blvd. and Santa Gertrudes to West Road, from West Road to Hacienda Blvd., from Hacienda Blvd. to East Road, from East Road to Fullerton Road, from Fullerton Road to Pathfinder, and from the top of Pathfinder we turn around and go back. Quite hilly.

Anyway on the return trip I'm flying down Pathfinder, clearing 40mph, when all of a sudden I hear this "thump" and a bunch of buzzing in my left ear. Fearful that a bee has just landed on my earlobe, I try to brush it away inadvertently driving it further into my ear canal. Which is one helluva bizzare and distracting feeling and causes my equilibrium to go all wacky. So I slow down, throw off the helmet, and try and dig the offending insect out with my sunglasses. I even tried leaning my head to the left and pounding on the right side.

At that point, my sister-in-law coasts up to me from behind, asking how in the hizell I got water in my ear. I relayed the story and asked her if she could give a look-see, which she did. Fortunately, she was at one point studying to be a physical therapist and had some idea what she was looking for. UNfortunately, she couldn't see anything in my ear -- the little bugger had gone in there deep. With the reassurance that she'd look at it with her ear thingy (you know, that thing that the doctors use to look in your ear) when we got home, we took off riding again.

Which was all sorts of uncomfortable, because I could feel the little bugger moving around in there; each time it did it put pressure on my inner ear which made my world go all wonky. After about a minute or so my world really twisted and I felt like I was going to fall off the bike as I encountered the WEIRDEST sensation of something being sucked out of my ear smoothly as the bug clmbed free and flew away. Which was, of course, one helluva relief.

I just hope it wasn't a botfly. :)

Oh, no, it's totally funny. I mean... we read about bee stings and bugs in the helmet and teeth all the time. But how often do you read of a bug in the ear?

And the way it jacked with my equilibrium was wacky.
