Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Best Fixed Wheelset under $200

Hi - I'm putting together a fixed gear project, and can alot about $200 for the wheelset. What's the best that I can do? I've seen some on ebay for as low as $129, but that seems suspiciously low.

don't forget about the cost for cog, lockring and freewheel on the other side...although the freewheel is optional or might not be relevant depending on what kind of wheel you get. seems like iro is the safest route for decent/inexpensive wheels.

edit: ben's cycles also seems like a good place. my next wheelset are definitely going to be handbuilt vs machine built.

click wheels then track, sun M13 II's laced to formula hubs, $135 and change plus shipping---you can save a bit more by getting just the rear and ordering an el cheapo front laced to a shimano hub from bikepartsusa.com for about $35(see their 700c sized wheels) bringing the total shipped to your door in at around $135

chucksbikes.com has the mavic's laced to formula hubs for about $165 plus shipping

i've owned both. the hubs are identical, except the iro's have an iro logo on them. i like velocity aerohead rims better than the mavic cxp22's. . . you can get them non-machined and in colors (if you're into that), and they just look higher quality. the cross section is similar, but on my cxp's, the seam in the weld on the rim didn't seem as clean. i never had a problem with either set, and i still have the iro's, going on 2 yrs now.

This is all very useful; at this level is there a significant difference between machine and handbuilt rims?

I should add that I add that I ride pretty exclusively in an urban area with terrible roads. Any consideration of durability? or are the mavics still good for that, too?

yeah there really is. handbuilt wheel are ALWAYS better. without question. half the wheels on bikes that come from the manufaturer are no good with NO spoke tension. As long as you get a good builder, i would get handbuilt ever time. or if you go the machine route, at least got them checked over by a good wrench.

^^^never had a problem, even with el cheapo wheel sets this kid is talking about getting, and it doesnt take long to check the wheels out before installing them and riding away, I'd recommend that to anybody, never know what some nose picker did when building your wheels

i believe the iro comes with a longer axle if that is important to you.

completly true. im not an expert, but ive just had ****ty experiences with machine built wheels. plus, unless this guy has experience building wheels or truing them, than he'll need to get them looked at, which could cost him some money. im just saying that he might as well go all out and get them built. im in winnipeg, builds round here go for about 35$, and truing for maby 20. it'll be cheaper machine-built, but cmon over time hand built will stay in true for longer and be more reliable. a little off topic but a roadie i know was useing a set of really nice American Classic machine-builts at a race, the guy works at a shop andm knows his stuff, and all of a sudden the thing collapses and ALL the spokes break, he goes down hard.

I'm building another conversion...and at the moment this is the wheelset I'm probably going to use for the build...the only positive I could throw towards IRO is you could get a fixed/fixed rear hub...if you want to wait till mid Oct. for shipping....and pay more $.

I've been riding them for a couple months now ~100 miles a week commuting and just goofing off, and they're still true. I've had zero problems with them. They came nice and tight and I think they look good. For the money, I don't think you can go wrong.

My friend just got them today and they seem great as far as tension and build goes.

Trons - the cxp ones come with the longer axle also.

Okay, I've ordered a pair. I'll let you know how they work out.

This are awesome track wheels for training or for everyday riding. The hubs are fully serviceable and the bearings are easy to find.

do you guys know how much a set of dura ace low flange laced to mavic cxp22 should cost?

$175 or so for hubs
2 cxp22 rims about $70

so about $315 give or take to have some built, which is a ton of money for a pair of wheels like those
