Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Road riding single speed / fixed gear

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello all. When riding the road on either a single speed or fixed gear, how do you get a proper warm up? Also, how do you cool down and recover between harder intervals when you only have one gear? I am wanting to buy a single speed road bike and had these concerns. Thanks.

If you want a warm up period, then don't ride as hard in the begining.
If you want recovery, then don't ride as hard after a sprint.

To warm up before a ride, take a good, long hot shower, without scalding one's self. Seriously. Warm up those legs well. After drying, put on leg warmers to maintain the muscle temperature. Stretching is no good. That'll damage muscle tissue.

I just ride real slow.

Exactly. Duh. Since you only have one gear, effort is directly correlated to speed and topography. There is no "just chilling out, 25 mph".

I just drink. Before that, I did a lot of speed.

i only bike as a meens of getting from bar to bar without getting sober .
Thanks everyone. I guess I should have figured to just use different rpm's as means of intensities.
throw on some comfortable clothes, do a quick stretch, and just ride. forget about intervals, leave the cyclocomputer and hrm home and just enjoy yourself.
Don't overthink it. I know a lot of guys like to train on fixed gears, but its the fun and simplicity of the bikes that draw most of us to them.

As a warm up, I pray to the fixed gear gods to make my journey safe. For special events or long rides I sometimes sacrifice small mammals or try to have sex with non-fixed gear believing virgins.
Sometimes the gods will bless my heart rate monitor so I can endure intervals and recover more quickly.
As for recovery… you never really recover from a fixed gear ride.

heh, funny, the ride is what keeps me (more) sober.
