Campagnolo Track vs. Road BB

My newish record track cranks require a campy 111mm BB. So, is there any reason a non "pista" campy 111mm BB couldn't be used? For example, a triple record or chorus? I was going to purchase a pista BB for my new frame but I read that it does away with sealings to save weight (I think around 43g).

This wouldn't be an issue if I was only riding on the track, but I usually like to train on the roads also, which could potentially introduce alot of dirt and grime into the BB.

Any thoughts or experiences with these BBs would be appreciated.

I don't know what to tell you for sure, but on my DA cranks, I used the ultegra road bb of the same dimension of the DA track one and it was perfect. As long as they are the same taper, and they are I believe, you should be fine.

problem is, the pista cranks are designed to be used with a symmetrical 111mm axle; the campy 111mm triple BB spindles are asymmetric, meaning that your chainline will be a few mm off. As tc says, yr best bet would be to get a Phil BB.

FWIW, cup & cone track BBs don't have seals in order to reduce drag, not to lose weight. Gram-shaving is not a big issue when racing the track like it is on the road.

As Mickster said, the Campy 111 mm Pista bottom bracket is symmetrical, while the road bottom bracket is asymmetrical. I am trying to find the 111 road spec, but I believe the assymmetry is more like a centimeter, which is an awful lot for a fixed gear. I'd definitely check it out before you buy. A Phil bottom bracket will give you better service and can be adjusted side to side to fix your chain alignment.

i run a chorus triple bb with my record pista cranks on my track bike. there's no problem or chainline issues. the bb shell is italian and i'm running ellipses with an eai cog, for reference.
