Mountain Biking - Thinking about getting an MTB

Was thinking about getting an MTB this year. LBS said he has a Specialized Epic, that he was using as a demo, that he would sell to me for $1250 (MSRP - $2060). Normally, I would choose a X-large frame but the demo one is a large. Below are the differences in the sizes of the bikes. A couple of the numbers are quite minimal but the question is, will it make that much difference. I'm 6'4"-ish - 34" inseam - 250# - if any of this matters in assisting me with my question.

Stem length - L 105mm - XL 120mm

Wheel base - L 1101mm - XL 1128mm

Head Tube Length - L 120mm - XL 140mm

Top Tube Length* - L 612mm - XL 638mm

Stand Over Height - L 753mm - XL 759mm

I'm 6' 3.75" myself and I can't stress how important it is to have a properly fitted bike. If possible try out both sizes and see which one feels more comfortable. I went from a sporting good store bike to a properly sized bike from a LBS and it made a world of difference. By having one that was better for my height I could ride further with less fatigue. You really do need to test both to decide. If you are just getting into mountain biking, that bike is a bit of overkill even though it's a sweet deal. Of course I'm happy with my $350 hardtail.

At your size the epic may not be the best choice. I have heard from a matually sized friend that it feels squirrily at his height. Besides that fitting is very personal and really there is no tried and true way. I am the exact measurement you are but prefer a really slack bike. I find it fits better and is far more versatile than a 'typical' xc bike which is more of a racer stance.

You can get the Large and put the 120 or a 130-140mm stem on it to compensate for the shorter length. 105mm stem on a Large is a bit short anyway.

I'm going to go test it out (fit, ride, etc) later this week. My wife's not thrilled about the price but we'll see. :)

Specialized bikes have a reputation of having a shorter top-tube than many other manufacturer's, so already you looking at a frame that is a smaller-Large if that makes sense.

Personally, I like the feel of a smaller bike. I feel I have more control and my body english has more of an affect. However, if you're riding a properly fitting road bike, the mtn bike may feel too cramped for a person your size.

Also, for a person of your size and weight, you may want to condider more of a "trail bike" like the Specialized Enduro instead of the XC race-oriented Epic.

The last time I rode in the woods or on trails, my bike had a banana seat and a nice ,wide slick for a back tire .. oh, yeah, ape hangers too. Still had fun in the woods though. What I would have done for a MTB back then :)
