Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Phil's BB/Hub worth cost?

Let's say I've got a Campy hookup: 10% over wholesale. Which means <$400 on a Campy Pista BB and both hubs.
I could however go nuts, and go Phil, for about a 60% cost increase (I can't say no to the SLR option on the High Flange hubs).

What would you do?

Given Phil's reputation for reliability until forever, should I be looking for used?

well, look at it this way. i have phils on 2 of my bikes. one side of one of my rears had a weird issue with the lockring threads. they're replacing that hub the next time they anodize that color. that's pretty awesome service and it's great to know that a company stands behind their product and wants their customers happy.

if you can swing the cost on phil wood parts, you shouldn't hesitate... but the campy stuff is not shabby either.

I guess there you have it. Certainly they're alot heavier, but durability and weatherproofing is significantly more my concern. If I was concerned with shaving grams I could take off my belt buckle. And with a life-time garuntee and great customer service, how can I say no? I think you guys just made my decision really easy.

If you have a hookup at campy, it's possible you work at a shop or race or something that qualifies you for a pro deal?

In that case, Phil's got a sweet pro deal.

Either way, my commuter has phil hubs and BB on it, and it's awesome, especially in crappy weather when I don't have to worry about anything.

Not worth it for me.

This is kind of embarassing to admit, but for the longest time I thought "campy" was referring the word campy, as in something that's kind of silly, like B horror films or whatever.

I remember talking about Ann Radcliffe's "The Mysteries of Udulpho" with someone and hearing them refer to it as a "campy" book, then reading something about "campy" bike parts online, and making some sort of weird connection between the two words. I know better now, I swear.

Campy BB's wear out quicker than Phils. My friend had a Record BB on his road bike and he said it wore out rather quickly. He got a Phil and its working a lot longer than his Record.

Istrip cheap hubs faster than the streaks in my underwear I got a set of phils man oh man do I love em and since they are in san jose support is a three day turn around

I don't ride track. I'm interested in it, but it is not something I've ever done. The closest I've got to sprint laps at a velodrome are doing sprint laps around City Hall (which I wouldn't reccomend to everyone, but is extremely fun). So yeah, sealed bearings are more or a consideration than the nigh-imperceptible difference in smoothness between the hubs NIB.
