This is the official thread for the Apple Pie Ride that will occur on Saturday, November 25th (two days after Thanksgiving).

This will give everyone a chance to finish digesting the turkey and become truly sick of pumpkin pie and long for something different.

This is a challenging route starting in Valley Center and running up Palomar South Grade and Mesa Grande, but the scenery in Bandy Canyon is worth every foot of climbing. The basic ride of 99 miles and 9k of gain will keep you on your toes, but it will also keep you from gaining excess weight from the eating holiday!

Basic loop: ~99 miles, ~9.2k vertical
(OMG) Loop + out and back to observatory: ~107 miles, ~10.5k vertical
(JFC) Loop + out and back to Julian: ~113 miles, ~10.4k vertical
(WTF) Loop + both out and back trips: ~121 miles, ~11.7k vertical

115 miles?! How come the mileage just went up? Are we doing a second observatory out-and-back at the top of Palomar? I clocked 107 miles a weekend ago. OC Roadie claimed 110 miles back in January.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. I just hope my obligatory Baldy PR attempt on Thanksgiving morning doesn't take too much out of my climbing legs.

Can't make it. I'm up north that weekend and my ride will be solo and lonely :(
Have fun and be safe riding.
(Phew! 115 mls and 10K feet of climbing? Eat lots of stuffing and potatoes!);)

Too bad. :( It's an incredibly beautiful ride. Maybe some other time you can join us on this ride. I hope to make it a regular part of the BikeForums SoCal calendar.

I was not positive on the exact mileage but I also wanted to include the Observatory and the town of Julian (Isn't that where Dudley's Bread comes from? hint hint Caligurl!!!!)... and like I told Brandy there is lots of places to cut corners by removing some of the mean little add ons...

I think you can also get that dudley bread at the corner of 78/76... along with pie if its wanted at that point ;)

That is just farther for Caligurl to drive..... if she comes for the ride we can load up the SAG vehicle at mile 60!

Count me in, tentatlively. I'm not ready to bring this one up with my wife until after the Baldy ride;) I would like to do both out-n-backs, if anyone else is up for that.

So do the 99 mile loop. As discussed before, you can easily finish that within daylight hours. And then ride a mile at the end to hit the century mark. You don't have to keep up with Extort, OC Roadie, or Pico that way. They'll have some detours to slow them down.

jason... you should know me by now.... i don't take the easy or shorter route... (bail outs are also not in my vocabulary) i know my limitations... but if i decide to do a ride... i'm dowing the whole thing or not doing it at all! that's one of the reasons i like organized rides... then i'm not a "burden" on anyone.... the organizers have their limits... but there are lots of people... so i'm not holding anyone up....

You wouldn't be taking an easy route. Or a shortened route. You'd be riding the Pie route's mountainous century option, not the OMG option (+observatory side trip) or the WTF option (+both side trips).

It's akin to doing the highland century at Grand Tour rather than doing the quadruple century. You're not taking an "easy" or "shortened" route. You're still doing your full route.

Nahhh.... my rack holds 2 bikes, plus I can get 2 bikes in the back if necessary and still hold 4 peeps... in a pinch, we can squeeze one more bike and person too :p

Somehow, I don't think I'll be doing much SAGGING, but I'll be there just in case!

I'll have to see how the scheduling goes for my time with Sarah. If I can do it, I might. Very tentative for now for one big reason, I'm NOT a climber. But that ride was so beautiful, it does call to me.

Ralph and Brandy, you've got two months to prepare! Two months before the Pie ride in January, I had just climbed Mt Baldy (very slowly and painfully) for the first time. And this time around, we'll be smarter about not sitting around as long at rest stops. And cut out the out and back to the observatory for anyone who might be under time pressure.

Brandy

Hey...if I was playing the sandbagger card, I wouldn't even attempt this! I honestly have no idea how I'll do, coming off of two months off of the bike and all physical activity. I can only imagine that I will have lost some strength!

I don't know what the others will decide, but I plan to start a civil twilight. Any earlier, and I would feel the need to carry lights at the beginning.

I still vote for a tour of good pie shops. Via automobile.

Actually...I will have five weeks to prepare, since I won't likely be cleared to ride for another 2-3 weeks. I'm still willing to give it a shot though!

Give it a shot. I'll train with you on Sundays once you're back on the bike. And we'll train as if we're doing the 99 miles/9.2k vertical, but come ride day, hey, if you ride out to pie, eat the pie, roll into Ramona at a digestive pace, and then choose to SAG it, so be it.
