I'm putting together my conversion street fix, finally found a crankset with 165mm cranks, and just need a BB now to complete. Since I'm on a budget, I'm definitely going for an inexpensive cartridge BB, and was more or less set on a Shimano, til I saw Wiggle was selling Campag Mirage BB's for £7.99. This is almost half the price of the cheapest Shimano ones, but here are two questions:

1) Are they any good? Surely some reason they're so damned cheap.
2) How do you fit the things? The lockrings don't look like anything I ever saw, nor do they look like the tool which works with the Record/Chorus bbs.

Help?

Campy cartridge BBs use a campy spline tool similar to the Shimano spline tool, but not interchangeable.

Campy square tapers (ISO) are different than Japanese(JIS). If you put Japanese cranks on an italian BB it may work, they are close to the same, but it may bottom out. All in all it's not worth it to try to use a cheap Italian BB. Just use a cheap JIS bb. Nashbar has one for $15

Since you already have a crankset your choice should be based purely on what taper you need.

oops too late I guess I shouldn't have tried to find a pic.

Looks like the Shimano then, since my crankset is Japanese. It's nothing special, just the first double with 165 mm cranks that I found on one of the bikes I'm stripping and Flipping. I'm in UK, so the Nashbar item is not an option. I guess I just kinda wanted to get at least one Campy logo on my bike;)

Thanks for the info though. I already have the tool for the Shimano one I think, and if nothing else, that would settle it.
