Having a Cubicle with a view is bad on days like today..........late in the season with bright sun, light winds, and warm temps. How can a Roadie work today when he knows these days are numbered? Plus, I need a training ride for the big BFNIC Oct 1st Ride! What to do? I got it, work hard until 11am and then bolt. Gotta Go. Later.

Oh my, work until 11?? you poor thing. I'm stuck hear at Northwestern until 4, and when I get out, I have to drive home to sit in my night class until 10PM, then up at 5 to return to Northwestern. The bike is just gonna collect dust in the hotel room today:(

Yeeha,

Enjoy your ride today Aham.

I just rode 7 miles around my subdivision at lunchtime with a friend of mine. He hasn't been on his bike since last year. We had a nice time spinning around and chatting. Psimet, we may have some fun wrenching for you on an old lugged Raleigh....

Great weather for a ride. Not exactly 'training' for this weekend, but I was able to test out the new Keo Sprints. Need to adjust the cleats a bit. Now it's back to work.

Robert McClury & NS bike path (i think that's what it is called). Neither is crowded during the week. It's usually the same few every day. This summer I was riding in the early am and it's about the same amount of traffic. Week-ends of course after 10am can be crazy., but with no cycling on sheridan road it makes it a hassle to cut over onto the road.

I'm starting to get tired of those paths, Ridge Rd., Everret, etc. The only thing worse than riding the same route for the entire summer is riding on the trainer in the basement.

I'm assuming you live up in the northern suburbs? The North Shore Century went a couple blocks from my house as you were heading up Ridge in Highland Park.

Got in my nice little 20-mile out and back ride. I am loving the Edge 305, but I'm not convinced that the avg. speeds are very accurate. I set it to autostop at anything less than 4 mph, but I may have to up that quite a bit. I hit several stoplights on my route and for whatever reason they are showing up in MB and counting against my avg. speed. It was pretty windy around here at times today. I spent a good deal of time in the big ring on my way back which is unusual for me. I need that heart rate to come down though...

From what I have read you really dont want AutoStop any higher then 3 or 4 mph. What do you mean the stops are showing up and how do you know? My AutoStop is set at 3mph and when I stop at a stop sign the "Moving Timer" auto pauses. Your total time will still roll and speed still may show, but it should not effect the average if it is below the AutoStop number. Just my experience though. Later.

Oh, I've got the technique down in ten easy steps:

Step 1: Cruise up to stop light.
Step 2: Confidently tilt head at car full of commuters cooped in the sedan.
Step 3: Wheels stop on bike.
Step 4: That  feeling hits the head, then stomach.
Step 5: Slow.... motion.... tip.... over....
Step 6: Pop up like nothing's wrong.
Step 7: High tail it away from the light
Step 8: Relax and sit on saddle.
Step 9: Realize saddle is at 90 degree angle from usual due to hitting ground on fall.
Step 10: Find a hole to crawl into and die a little while adjusting saddle and waiting for traffic to clear.

It's only happened twice to me, but both times were virtually identical.

50 mile ride on a work day. You disgust me, aham.

That is classic. Can I borrow that? Step 9 actually positioned my stock seat in a way that made it more comfortable as I finished out the last 3 miles of the NSC.

Ya, it does the shutoff, but when I am looking at the graph on MB, there are 7 'dips' where my speed bottoms out at 0 mph. Are these simply not counted in the avg. speed or are they moments when the GPS lost signal? I'm thinking it's just the nature of the route I take. When you look at the speed distribution on my ride, ~12 of the 19 miles were done over the average speed (with the most in the 17mph range). The lows just bring the number down more than the highs bring it up I guess.

The only reason I bring it up is that it is almost exactly the same as my cateye astrale was recording even though I am certain that my overall speed today was faster. I'm just trying to figure out a way to make myself faster

Funny.

It charts all the speed, but your Average Moving Speed is only the avg speed above the AutoStop number. The Average Overall Speed is the total avg speed including all speeds under the AutoStop number.

You will get faster. Just keep riding!!!!!!!! :)

Same here, we were within 3 blocks of my house when we were on Everett just before the tollway and we went right past my parents house on Mayflower on the way back.
I like the path on Windy days because you get a little protection by the trees on both sides and the distance between intersecting streets are a good distance to hammer in the drops and then break at the intersection.

totally agree, the views and terrain on the path can get soooo boring. Thats why I sign up for all these rides every month or head up north to Wisconsin. I'll be biking up in Door County in October. Its easy to log a lot of miles up there. Yea, the NSC went by my house also , I'm up in Lake Bluff.

Mmmmm, the Door in October ... bliss. I'll be up there on 10.21 doing my last out-of-town ~100k of the season before settling in for 5 months of only commuting and riding on the trainer.

Alright, aham23, how was your Wednesday ride? I know you skipped out of work for one. You're not fooling anyone but your management!

Oh yeah, it's a triffle bit windy from the west today. I got a little 9 mile loop in at lunchtime and the portions of riding east I was flying! Too bad I need to get some real work done, or I would have taken a three martini... I mean three Clif Shot.... lunch.... ;)

Nope, no ride today. Just got back from Lunch and Starbucks. Now it is BF time then back to work. Being in Management is tough.

Maybe a nice little ride Friday afternoon to prepare for the BFNIC ride this Sunday? I think I will pencil that in to my schedule.

Aham - How is the riding on Renwick and Caton Farm Rd? I've always heard about Schlapp being a great road to ride.

Caton Farm can be a bit busy with Truck Traffic depending on the time. Renwick is a great route out of Plainfield. It turns into Wheeler which will take me out to Schlapp, which is a nice newly paved road. It is not all that long, but it will take you to Walker, which will run you West all the way to the Fox River and Millington. From there you can hit a bunch of Smaller towns and county roads with light traffic. I can even find some Rollers over by the Fox river and Silver Springs State Park. We should ride sometime, well, if we have any nice days left in the season. :)

Get in at 6 and unlock...work until 11, then leave for a lunch ride...back at work by 1:30...lock up and leave some time after 5:30.

Ride time = 2+ hours

Work time = 9+ hours

Not only do you get your ride in but you're still the guy who gets in first and is the last to leave.

Brilliant!

Yesterdays ride was nice, but with only one ride this weekend I have been left wanting. Add to this the fact that Thursday's high is forcasted at 40 freakin degrees AND I can not stop staring out the window at work.

The Sun is out and the American Flag is barely moving in a South West direction. Yes, I want to ride my bicycle. I must ride my bicycle. Have you seen my bicycle? :)

From the time I stopped staring out my office window to the time I rode out of my garage the wind stopped by for a visit. Heading North was tough, but heading East it was brutal. Every thing hurt today, but hey I got a 30 miler in on a Monday in October, so who am I crapping :) Later.

Too Dangerous. I have to head North towards Naperville, which is like the 3rd largest city in the State of Illinois. Traffic is very heavy. Too many people running late and driving like idiots around here. Plus I drop the kid off at daycare before heading into work. Later.

try commuting to work by bike

I'm one of the few who can easily pull off commuting. And I get a helluva long ride - 16 to 25+ mi. one way! But the problem is the sun coming up too late and down too early these days. I tried to drive to work, ride home then ride to work, drive home but I still barely made it back before the sun went down.

I know I could pony up for lights but I would like other toys first.

My commute (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/dashboard.mb?episodePk.pkValue=1186913)

I tried planning it out for a week and then it just hit me. I have the ability to drive to Lakewood FP, park the car and ride the new Millenium trail till it hooks up with the North Shore. I never really need to ride on the street. Then at Waukegan Rd, I head north and blammo... I'm at work. We have a health club so I shower and head up to my desk. I was shocked it was so easy.
