Bicycle Mechanics - Look Pedals

Hey all,

Well, I made the switch from SPD to Look pedals. The main reason I did it was because the SPD's where causing some serious foot pain right in the middle of my foot after about 2 hours on the bike. It would get to the point of making my toes numb. The LBS told me it was mostly because I was putting all the pressure on one small area and that a bigger cleat like Look would spread it out over a larger area. Plus, they were easier to clip in and out. Unfortunately, I had to buy new shoes to fit the cleats.

So, I was wondering, any tips or things to know when installing these pedals and cleats? I installed my own SPD pedals and cleats with no problems and I assume it will be a similar install with the Look, but I just wanted to ask in case there is something I need to know.

I did the same change for much the same reason a couple of years ago, and no, there shouldn't be any problems, just follow the instructions that come with the cleats. Be careful to position the cleats properly though, to get the correct placement of your foot over the pedal.

You might find a saddle height adjustment is necessary as well, since the shoe,pedal and cleat combination will be a different thickness from your old ones.

Good point about the seat adjustment aerobat. I had not thought about that.

I find that getting my fit adjusted right after switching shoes or pedals very difficult. I replaced my old shoes mid January and still don't feel like the adjustment is just right. My advice (maybe too late) is to try to notice as carefully as possible where your foot is in relation to the the axle on the old pedals (I use the tip of the rounded protrusion on the inside of my foot, just back from the toes, as a reference), and possibly even marking it on the shoes. Then, notice distance out from the crank and try to duplicate that in the new setup as well.

Yeah, I just put them on. Getting the fit is difficult. Luckily, I had to get new shoes since my old one's won't take Look cleats. So, I can always just go back to the old setup if needed. I think I got it pretty close, but I need to go out for a ride to be sure.

Dang, it's so easy to clip in and out of these. At first I wasn't sure I was even clipped in. :)

How to install Look cleats: just screw them on!

How to adjust Look cleats: take a looonng ride, and carry a big-@$$ screwdriver along with you. Stop every once in a while to readjust the cleats. Head back when you are happy.

Hi P.B., hope everything is working out OK. Yes, I like the Looks, and am glad I made the switch, no more "hot foot"! I just wish they were practical with my commuter, as far as being able to walk when you get off the bike etc.
