I think we need to have our own polka dot jerseys available for our special few (at least ten) that do these monster rides.
That would be the Planet Ultra King of the Mountain Jersey.
cue Caligurl to model it for us....

Nah, it's gotta say something COMPLETELY stereotypically Californian:

Jason, you always underestimate yourself, you climb great. After riding with you I don't think that you would have any problems with Muholland Challenge, Breathless Agony, and Heartbreak (KOM). Look at me I have knocked out several 9000+ centuries, my speed like Caligurl's may not be the greatest, but I finish them and I enjoy them. Besides whatever you climb usually means a great downhill, I love downhills.
You must be comparing yourself to the top climbers in the pro peloton. Compared to the rest of us mere mortals, you have nothing to be ashamed about with your climbing.
Lemme rephrase... I fully believe I could do the KOM rides next year if taking Saturdays off wasn't an issue. And someday, when I get Saturdays off, I fully intend to go earn that jersey. But I do feel a bit silly sporting a self-made (or BikeForums-made) KOM jersey until I can keep up with the likes of OC Roadie circa summer 2005. (An arbitrary standard, I know. This originally was my target for rewarding myself with a climbing bike like the R3, until I finally decided I simply wanted it and didn't feel like waiting.) About 500-600 vertical feet per hour left to go...

I understand what Jason means. A climber earns his polka dot jersey by being a fast climber, not because he made it up, or everybody that finishes the TDF would have one. I can climb, like to climb when I train, but would never approach a group of cyclists and say I'm a climber. They'de laugh. When I'm at my best and riding GMR, there are a few of the guys ride past me like I'm standing still. Now they are climbers!
I'd feel silly wearing a polka dot jersey. Maybe a BA, Bear jersey, a Triple Crown, but not a Polka Dot or Green jersey, etc.
Leave the Polka to OC and friends!

They wear the jerseys so I guess I'll have to get one! Some other frineds have the Triple Crwon jerseys, so I 'll need to get one of those too!:D

We could turn this into a thread about jersey's. Jersey's you earn like Breathless Agony, Planet Ultra KOM, Death Ride 5-Pass, Climb to Kaiser, Triple Crown, Grand Slam. All these jerseys I just mentioned you have to earn before you can buy them. I see nothing wrong with wearing those jerseys. The person who has completed the requirements for the jersey is entitled to wear it. Let's face it there are very few people in California that attempt to get these jerseys.
Now the leader jerseys from the TDF, Giro, Veulta, Tour of California, I would not even dare to wear, I didn't earn them. It is a little pretentious. Talk about a poser!!!!!!!

You forgot Everest Challenge. Finished that this weekend, and they weren't kidding when they put "Challenge" in the title.
The cool thing about Everest Challenge is that it's both a UCSF sanctioned race (CA/NV state climbing championships), for which the winners (Of which I was most definitely not one. I'll be elated if I broke into the top 20 in the Cat IV/V field of 80+ entrants. There are some *strong* IVs and Vs out there.) are eligible to purchase CA state champion Jerseys, but they also sell a ride Jersey that any participant can buy. Though they were selling them at check-in, so I guess you could technically sign up, buy a jersey and bail, so it's not quite as official as a triple-crown (which rides constitute the triple crown anyway?) or similar Jersey.

Your right, I did forget that one. I think most people who will drive up to Bishop for this ride will at least attempt a good portion of it. At least equal to the amount of climbing on some of these other rides.
Had several friends up there this weekend on that ride. How was the ride this weekend? Was the wind a factor like it was for the Tour of Two Fires?

There wasn't a whole lot of wind on day one, which was fortunate as day one is hard enough on it's own. I was hurting something fierce by the end of that day, as I cracked on the last climb. I was cramping in both legs for about the last hour, and just suffering through, keeping the pedals turning in survival-mode. Took me just over 8 hours to finish. The top finishers, even in the IV/Vs were coming in under seven hours. Think the record on that stage is just under 6 hours.
There was a bit of a headwind on the last climb on day two, but it wasn't too bad. It was just enough to motivate me to push beyond my comfort zone enough to stay with a small group of guys, and take some turns at the front. I figured I'd suffer more if I let them ride away and tried to fight the wind on my own, than I would working with the group.
Temperatures were pretty pleasant both days, with the exception of being a bit cold in the mornings. The first descent on the first day was not fun (frozen fingers), but I'd rather deal with cold mornings than the triple-digit afternoon temps, they've had in past years (This was my first year doing Everest Challenge.).
Does SCV refer to Santa Clarita Velo (I suppose I could read the name thread and figure that out, huh?)? If so, it might have been your buddies I was riding with for most of the 2nd stage, and part of the 1st climb on the first stage. I think one of their names was Alan, can't remember the other guy's name. We were riding about the same pace, and ended up riding together for most of the second stage. I was on the red Allez wearing the K&N kit. Hopefully I wasn't too much of a wheel-sucker.

Actually, SCV stands for Santa Clarita Valley, but I am a velo member. Alan was one of three riders, I think the one whose name you can't remember was Hrair. He just started riding a little over 2 years ago. The third person up there was a female. Her name is Irene Johnson. They are all great people.
Apparently, the people that put on the Everest Challenge are tired of doing it. The rumor is that Planet Ultra will be taking it over. It will still be a stage race, but with a little bit more promotion it may become more riders.
If I can get my weight down, I may attempt it next year. I don't intend to race, just ride it and complete it.

The Triple Crown jersey is polka dot. And you're eligible to buy it by finishing.
If you earn the jersey wear it. Regardless of how well of a climber you are.
That's my goal for next year. I haven't done any serious climbs, but I do hill repeats and have done Waterman and Devils Canyons (both serious grades but only 2k of climbing).
Still, I think it would be pretty cool if we could set it up where we do say a baldy, onyx, and palomar climb and then get a bf socal climbers jersey. Just a suggestion but I know we'd need over 10 people to accomplish it for an order.
I agree with Mr. Beanz that I would feel silly in a climbers jersey if I couldn't climb like a mountain goat. Regardless, there are 2 kinds of people that wear marked (yellow, green, polka dot) jerseys. There are posers then there are those that wear it as a badge of honor. They may specialize in climbing or spinting or just think they're the fastest overall. Usually they're pretty good too because they work hard and dont like to be beat at thier specialty. Fact is though everyone has someone who is going to beat you; especially in an area which hails the reigning (court rulings pending) TdF Champion.

I could live with that. I still need to climb Onyx sometime. I fully believe I can do it, but I've never gotten around to it.
That could be an interesting series for next year, it is time to start thinking about setting 2007 goals. I would suggest that all the rides need to have at least 10k in gain and that we have more rides than necessary (like the triple crown) so that everyone has a chance to train and accomplish it.
I am just stoked that I have one ride left to accomplish my goal for the year. After that ride I get to pick up a couple new jerseys for 2006.

Interesting idea, but it would take way too long to earn that jersey. You're looking at about 10 very hilly centuries. Assuming you could squeeze in one a month on dates people agree on, with two extra centuries in case some people can't make certain dates, it would take a year to squeeze in that series. (And I really doubt one could organize one a month. Look at how busy everyone already is with their ride schedule.)
Maybe do a 3-ride series or something like that, with each ride offered twice. We've got some crazy BikeForums hilly centuries this year, namely the Pie ride and the Baldy challenge. The Pie ride is already being run twice this year. It's not too big a stretch to run one more hilly century, run all three of them twice, and offer all the people who complete all three of them once a jersey.

not to mention all the logistics involved... who would keep the list of who has completed which ride? you really would need volunteers to give out "dots" or take names at certain points along the route to make sure you actually did the correct route (ala planet ultra's dots along mulholland or the dots at the redlands savage hill climb) setting cut off points (again ala PU... they set there's between a certain speed... forget what that is now)
triple crown works cuz one group takes care of the "paperwork" but uses other's rides... planet ultra works cuz they just plain ROCK! the other rides are just individuals or individual clubs that have been doing it or are getting tips and pointers from those that know how to get it to work....

That's the first page of every ride thread. :)
I'm not sure, but I don't think I'd be too worried about someone not finishing/doing the climbs wanting to buy the jersey. He'd probably feel silly wearing it on a BF ride knowing that no one rode up those mountains with him. I know I wouldn't wear it.
Logistics of keeping track is pretty easy. It's a pretty small group. And on any mountain climbs that descend the same way you came, you'd be on the honor system.
Logistics of getting people together for such a ride series is much harder. We seem to all be rather busy.
Getting enough people to manage a run of 10 jerseys, that's probably the showstopper. Only eight people attempted the first Pie ride, and only four finished. (Though under different circumstances, I think Nosra451 and The Fixer were more than capable of finishing that day.) How many people are currently signed up for Baldy Challenge? Under 10, I believe.

Why? We have no doubt about who finished the initial Pie ride. Logistics and the honor system work very differently in a very small group.

While I'm sure as a small group we are all honest. Those that are on BF rides of over 100 miles with 10,000 + plus in climbing would be able to verify if the ride and climbs were completed by the other BF members that rode that ride.
But then as stated earlier, logistics enter into the equation. As much as I would like to do the Pie Ride, I won't be able to ride, because I spending Thanksgiving with my family in Phoenix. Why not also use non-BF rides that have published results. such as Breathless Agony, Mulholland Challenge, etc.
As for the jersey, we just wait until the end of the year, and any individual who completes the requirements would be able to order the jersey. Plus it would give a year for us to come up with an awesome design.

I'd be cool with that. Let some people log their 10k+ vertical foot rides in other organized rides. Give those who can't make it a chance to do it in BikeForums rides. As for time for a design, I doubt James will need a year. :p
