two words: big refrigerators

we take advantage of wide open space on the ocean to float gigantic geothermal powered peltier units... the cold side would face in the air and the hot side would be diverted back into the earth where it would be recycled into more power for the peltier ... almost perpetual motion, right

anyway, with enough big refrigerators, it would get pretty frosty in the air, and that would diffuse all over the atmosphere and reverse the increase in global temperature rise

i think i'm right. i'm gonna go get my nobel peace prize now.

i am working on a solution using ice cold beer. Been researching the problem for going on 30 years now. I hope to have it done in the next 30 years.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released the Climate Change Technology Program (CCTP) Strategic Plan, which details measures to accelerate the development and reduce the cost of new and advanced technologies that avoid, reduce, or capture and store greenhouse gas emissions.

The CCTP Strategic Plan organizes roughly $3 billion in federal spending for climate technology research, development, demonstration, and deployment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase economic growth. Technologies emphasized for development are hydrogen, biorefining, renewable power generation, clean coal and carbon sequestration, nuclear fission and fusion.

The Plan sets six complementary goals:

1. Reducing emissions from energy use and infrastructure;
2. Reducing emissions from energy supply;
3. Capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide;
4. Reducing emissions of other greenhouse gases;
5. Measuring and monitoring emissions; and
6. Bolstering the contributions of basic science to climate change.

These six CCTP strategic goals focus primarily on mitigating GHG emissions to make progress toward stabilizing atmospheric GHG concentrations. They are not intended to encompass the broad array of technical challenges and opportunities that may arise from climate change. These may include such research areas as: mitigating vulnerabilities and adaptation of natural and human systems to climate change; addressing effects of acidification of the oceans; geoengineering to reduce radiative forcing through modification of the Earth’s surface albedo or stratospheric sunlight scattering; and others. Such topics are important, but they are beyond the scope of this Plan.

I think it would be easier to put big mirrors out in orbit. Use tehm to power orbital power stations, bnut mmake sure that in summer we get lots of mini-eclipses. Then when things start getting out of control in the other direction move them so they are focus light that would otherwise have missed the Earth back onto us!

I hear ya, whoooooooo boy:) your the man where's your freakin trophy?. I think that would solve the problem for good.

First off, Peltier devices so far as I know all have coefficients of performance far less than one. Essentially, that means that you end up with putting more heat into the system than you tranfer from one part to the other. They're incredible wasteful compared to fluid-based heat pumps, with decent heat pumps having COP's of 5 or greater. Bottom line either way: you increase the overall energy in the earth's atmosphere. Also, peltier devices aren't very good for transferring heat long distances.

Second, all forms of power generation currently in use or being dreamed up utilize energy imbalances. Sure your peltier devices are further the energy imbalance, but you can not recover any more of that energy that what is transferred in the first place, minus the energy required to transfer it.

An almost better idea (aside from being ridiculously impractical) is to pump refrigerant between the oceans and a collection of huge radiators in geosynchronous orbit to transfer heat away from the earth.

Sorry if this is a joke...I've heard to many people say things like this seriously to catch on to the humor very easily.
