Southern California - LBS specializing in fitting? Preferably Westside LA

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is there a good LBS on that you trust to give a really good bike fitting. I probably don't need laser measurements or whatever the latest and greatest is, but I'm looking for more than the "drop the string from the knee" sort of thing. I'm looking for someplace in the LA area, preferably westside but I'm willing to travel a bit for the right place.
I recently started cycling again after a couple of years off and my left knee is starting to acting up, so I want to make sure the bike is set up correctly. (Yep, I also plan on working my cadence up to 95+ from 85 or so and though I'm loathe to do it, I'll probably give up on spin classes I've been taking. They've been great at getting my wind back, but the excessive standing and mashing probably isn't so hot for my knees. I first noticed the problem in a spin class actually.)
Thanks for any recs for a good place for a fitting.

sometimes you get knee pain when you start up again. I had knee pain originally but it went away after I worked on my form and strengthened the muscles. Some pain is not always a sign of an improper fit.

I went with a guy named Eddie Monier. He's in Brentwood. I think his website is something like velo-fit.com
He was great. 3 months after my fit, I started having knee problems bc of some new equipment and he re-fitted me for free.
If you are in Topanga, then it's doable to come out to Agoura. Try Sundance. They do Serotta fittings. www.sundancecycles.com

Is Scott still at Helens? And is that the Helens in Santa Monica? My wife finally agreed to let me get a fitting in hopes that it clears up my knee problem.

Scott's at the Marina store. They recently got in some new fitting equipment and can probably dial you in pretty well.
If you go in on Sundays you can ask for Travis too, he's a good friend, very nice, and will hook you up.

Not sure if I want to go that far. Sundance is closer to me, I just have more friends that recommend Helens. Any suggestions for what type(s) of fitting services to get done if my main issue is an ITB (knee) problem? Hoping it's just a matter of fit.
If you can swing it, consider consulting with Eddie Monnier, who is coaching (and presumably fitting) out of Phase IV: http://www.phase-iv.net/about-phase-iv/coaching-resources
He maybe doing other things as well, but you can get a hold of him there, apparently.
I'd trust someone like him before I'd let just anybody mess with knees. No personal experience with him, YMMV, yada yada yada.
Best of luck!

OP is from last September. I resurected an old thread instead of starting a new one since I knew I saw this topic here before.

hey urbanknight-- fyi - i don't know if velo worx' location on Lincoln is still open. I drove past a few weeks ago and looked like it was no longer open.
I heard there was a guy at Cynergy on 23rd and Santa Monica who's supposed to be good. Of course I don't know his name.
Veloworx is definitely open- I was just there today, and I think I saw Eddie there. He was doing a bike setup/fit. They've got some very nice bikes on the racks. Couple of Looks, a Record equipped Calfee for $3000 ('06 or earlier Campy... not UT), other stuff. Very helpful with some tools and other questions...
Nice guys!

I am also looking at getting a professional fitting in the West Los Angeles, SFV, West Valley area (I'm in Calabasas). The folks that I have found include:
- Sundance Cycles (http://www.sundancecycles.com/services/fitting.php);
- Nate Loyal - an independent working out of Helens on Broadway (http://www.nateloyal.com/), and
- Steve at Cynergy Cycles on Santa Monica.
So I am also interested in any feedback and recommendations.

Steve is the guy I wound up going to. He did a great job. He will push the specialized products where he thinks there could be a part change that'll make a difference. He got me into wider bars which really do make a difference and made several other changes for the better. +1

So what is a cost of a "good" fitting? My LBS quoted me $100 for a visual fitting... and up to $300 for a "full" fitting. Not sure what that meant...

For a non-racing fitting I was quoted $165 by Nate and $175 by Steve at Cynergy. Nate said it would take 1.25 - 1.5 hours. Steve said 2 - 2.5 hours. And yes, Steve sold me $200 worth of Specialized stuff when I talked to him!

Anybody know the rates at Sundance? If not, I'll just have to call them when I get my fork on.

I just got a fitting at budget pro bike (Oscar). Very helpful, adjusted cleats... good basic run through for only $25 (about 45min). It got rid of knee pain and lower back pain. Feel more power, but i need to develop the in the new areas... Is it just me, or does $150 for fitting seem really pricey? There are about 8 variables to adjust for (saddle hight, aft, stem, cleat....) which doesnt really have to make you an expert, just well experienced.... my $.02
Not eactly the westside but for value and quality... i think it's worth the drive.

Well, I used to consider myself competent in self fitting. I'd use the KOPS method for fore/aft, calculations for saddle height, play peek-a-boo with the front axle for stem length, and I have speedplay free float pedals which really don't need much adjustment. Yet I still have a hankering right knee problem. The people who charge $25 usually do less than that and don't spend a good amount of time making sure that one adjustment didn't throw a previous one off. Is it worth $100+? I'll let you know in a few weeks.
