Texas - Who's up for a DFW area BF's ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

With the second half of Texas's prime riding weather upon us, I think its high time we got another BF's group ride planned. Hopefully get a few more folks out for this one too. :) Other than Oct 7th (Autumn in Bonham), I'm open to suggestions on date and route. Maybe something fairly centerally located to the DFW area so that we can get some guys from the FW side of town out as well. There's also the Tour de Ray Roberts (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=34290) route that I don't think we ever did end up riding that we had all discussed and planned on back in the spring.

I'm going to throw out the date of Oct 21st as a starting point for a date. :) As far as milage, I know some of us have been off the bike a bit lately, while others are in prime condition. I'd say 40-50mi should be doable for most anyone though if we keep the pace reasonable. The Tour de Ray Roberts route linked above is 46mi.

sure, I'm game, though the time trials are that weekend and I still haven't made up my mind if I'm doing it or not. Also, there are a couple other rides thart weekend, but none are in the close metroplex area I don't think.

Yeah, the TT's and a ride in Glen Rose is that weekend I think. I'm open to pushing it to Sunday or another weekend if a lot of people have plans. I could probably even do the 14th most likely if thats better.

I could do it on the 14th I think, or I'd be happy to do it on Sunday the 22nd. I think that would be the best date.

EJ - as last time - if you can keep up. :p :)

Lets figure out a route about 50mi, plan for the mid-morning of the 21st. By then the weather should be good for say about a 9 or even 10am start.

I think the Ray Roberts route was about 54mi if memory serves, I'll go dig up the link to that route tomorrow. Theres also lots of routes listed on the PBA website that range in the 40's and 50's. Most start in Plano.

9:00 am is good but 10:00 is too late. I would actually like to start earlier than 9. If you dress in layers that can be removed as the day warms you should be okay. We'll have to watch the forcast this week to see if the rain is actually going to come through. The last time I did the Ray Roberts route the roads were rough and there were lots of two lane roads. Those conditions don't bother me but there may be others who prefer better riding conditions.

Good point Kevin. I didn't get much riding in this morning (stupid school projects) and I hope to be heading to the State Fair this afternoon. Tomorrow looks like a good chance of rain too, though if it gets a break in the rain I'll go out on the Schwinn for a bit. I really want to get a short ride on the Gazelle to zero in the newly relocated Flite on it before I do any major distances. I'd hate to have to stop a group every 5-10mi to screw with the saddle. :o :)

Weather looks good, can we get a head count? If we can get a decent number we'll do the ride, otherwise I'll probably ride solo Saturday to dial in the new setup on the Gazelle and do a PBA ride Sunday. I'm 120mi from my yearly goal and WANT IT DONE.

I'm in! I've been sick all week and am finally feeling better. I am 420 miles away from my goal and really need to do long rides on Saturday and Sunday. I'm still a little bit congested but I feel like I can definitely ride this weekend. I probably don't need to do any fast pace or intense rides but a nice steady 17-18 MPH ride will work for me.

10-19-06, 11:30 AM
Kevin, if nothing else we'll hook up for a ride Saturday morning. I hope to get out for a short ride this afternoon to get the Gazelle's fit dialed in. I've changed the bars/stem and the saddle since I last rode it so it may take a few adjustments till it's back to where I want it.

Jon -- Let me know where and what time. The past two Saturdays, I have ridden from my house at 7:30am to the RBM in Frisco, rode their group ride then I rode back home. This has given me 55 miles and a great workout. I am looking for similar milage Saturday and Sunday.

55's probably a bit heavy for me on Saturday. How long is the Frisco RBM ride it self?

The RBM Frisco Ride is 25 miles by itself. I will be doing 55-65 on Saturday -- 15 miles each way to RBM Frisco, their route then part of my usual training loop. I probably won't even do the group ride with them. They leave at 9:00 but I will be going through that area around 8:30 and will probably just keep on going on their loop by myself. I am going to put in as many miles as I can between 7:30 and 11:30.

Which ride are you doing on Sunday? Since we have no takers for a DFW BF ride on Saturday or Sunday, I will be doing the PBA Sunday morning M&M ride.

10-19-06, 08:57 PM
Yeah, I'm thinking of doing the M&M ride too. Looks like their pace is about what I'm able to do. The "Do-Rag" ride was a little fast for me on the Cuda, and probably would have been fast for me on just about any bike (unless they were all on Schwinn Varsities or something). I got that short (11mi) ride in this afternoon to test out the fit on the Gazelle. Everything felt pretty good. Will probably feel better after I get a better wrap job on the bars done.

8:30 huh? I may not be up and moving that time in the morning. I'll be out fairly late tomorrow night at my wife's concert. I'll probably do the RBM Richardson 27mi at 9am. I think I'll be up and moving by then considering I can get there in 5mins from my place.

BF, M&M, PBA, RBM! Too many acronyms for a newbie! Would somone be so kind to explain each one :)

I think that RBM is Richardson Bike Mart, the LBS ;)

I will be done with school here at purdue this semester and Im looking foward to moving back home to Dallas and doing some riding. I picked up cycling while in college, but only had time to ride white rock a few times.

Thanks

Louis

Are any of the DFW BF members still riding??? I am still going strong but have not seen any of the board members on any of the group rides. Please don't tell me that 50 degree weather is too cold:eek: .

I am actually looking for riders in the DFW area to ride with on a regular basis... preferably in the Keller/Forth Worth area, but also out at White Rock Lake. I'm not nearly as motivated riding by myself and I need people to challenge me and keep me going... anyone game?

11-04-06, 07:21 PM
I'm in McKinney. I am game for anything. I have not done the White Rock thing in quite some time but am willing to give it a shot. I did a good ride this morning...I did the Plano Bicycle Association East Side ride. it was about 37 miles at a moderate pace, which was perfect for this time of year. What days do you ride at White Rock? Let's get something going.

I actually saw more then one person cycling today, a first in FW :p. Found 2 or 3 tiny groups consisting of 2-3 people each.

I rode with a group of 10 today. It's amazing how many people stay in due to 50 degree weather:eek: I've been preparing all summer long for the fall...buying tights, jackets, base layers, and shoe covers. I don't ride as many days as I did in the summer but I am still putting in ~100 miles per week.

I did 22mi today down to White Rock at about 2pm. I was thinking of going out to the PBA ride this morning, but both my wife and I haven't been feeling 100% and wasn't going to risk going out in too cool of weather when I could wait a few hours for it to warm up 10 degrees or so. As it was I left with a bit too light of gear and had a chilly ride down to White Rock in the wind. The way back was nice though, avg'ing over 18mph with the wind to my back. I really need to invest in some full tights, and my leg warmers are getting very tight around the quad muscles to the point they're a bit unconfortable.

The lack of anti-freeze in DFW's cyclists is very apparent. :p
All of the people i passed/crossed on my saturday ride were all bundled like it was snowing and 20 below out. :p I was all like DUDE THIS IS WARM. Yesterday i went cycliong and at the peak of the day it was 49 and the cold wind that was blowing was cold :p

LOL!!! When I got to my group ride yesterday there were guys wearing balaclava's:eek: It was 50 degrees!!! I wore full bib tights, base layer, long sleeved jersey and a shell and was snug as a bug and at one point I was too hot. I laughed when I passed another cyclist the other day and he was wearing something that looked like a snow suit.

I can ride out at White Rock any time on the weekends and even during the week. I have a very flexible schedule.

Lucky. :p I had been doing White Rock during the summer on Tus/Thrus mornings when traffic was at its peak.

One thing I find really helps is my wind blocker for my chest. Forget who makes it atm, but you can get them at RBM. I put it between my jersey and base layer, and really helps keep the chest from being too cold while not putting on too many layers.
