I have been mountain biking ever since I was a messenger in san francisco,I have owned a specialized hard rock ( crappy bike IMO) and a 95 fisher hoo koo e koo (the last american made one).I have been an avid rider taking all day rides all over the city and in marin...well to make a long story short,I moved to texas, sold my fisher (big mistake) and have been having mountain bike withdrawls ever since (it's been 10 years) now,I'm looking to buying another one because I discovered there are trails to be ridden in downtown houston (yeah) and my city is having bike trails for safe riding so I don't end up getting wiped out by some drunk hick from here.I have been out of the loop for some time now and need some input on getting a good bike (hardtail),the last bike that I wanted bad was a bontrager race (I can't seem to find any used).I noticed there are hardly any cro-moly framed bikes out there, just aluminum.Well,I'm looking to spend under a grand for one and need some help, what's good out there? Thanks!!

A friend just picked up one of these...just under $1K in Canada...probably much less in the USofA

a lot of bang for the buck, and although he is about 300#, it still handles like a ferrari on the trails

I have a Bobcat Trail...also a nice bike with less expensive components

Hey BAT! Welcome to BF! I have a Kona Caldera and although I also have a couple of FS, I still have to say my Caldera is my favorite. If you click on my sig below you can see what it looks like, it's the "half squishy" and it ran me $1000. This year's model is lower priced and lower spec'd though.

And by the way - November 18th is VeloSwap and we are trying to get a few of us together to go check it out. Wanna join us?

Welcome Welcome! I'm glad you found us. That is great that you are in houston, but Austin is only an hour away and it is an EXCELLENT place to ride. The Greenbelt is one of the best places in Texas, if not the best.
