Anyone see the new surly yet? A picture is up on the MTBR surly boards, looks like surly made a utility frame like the xtracycle freerad, looks like it uses xtracycle accessories too. Beefy tubing 26'' wheels, and disk brake compatible. Im gonna have to get one of these. :D

it's toward the bottom of the page. that thing looks amazing. I wish it was up on the surly site now so I could get a better idea of what exactly is on the frame, but i think this is my next buy. i've been considering the xtracycle for a while now, but this looks absolutley wonderful.

also, are those 26" or 29ers? it's hard to tell. personally i'd prefer the 29ers.

Off the hook! I've totally been perusing craigslist looking for a deal on a mtn bike to build an xtracycle. This changes everything.

Surly rocks.

While I have to admit that is a NICE looking ride, if I ever manage to get the cash, I'll be buying from xtracycle. After all, it was their idea. If I worked at xtracycle I'd be talking to a lawyer about the possibility of a lawsuit.

edit: having looked at the cleverchimp blog, I change my mind. Since they use xtracycle components, I guess it's ok. Ok then, put me down for a pre-order too.

Xtracycle's right there in the Surly booth at Interbike. This is friendly collaboration.

Glad to hear it. I always hate to see a product's creator getting shafted by a larger company.

Now, how to convince the wife that I need a sixth bike... :D

Looks very cool. Benefits of this bike over a conversion seem to be:

lighter
geometry specified by company (not approximated by extracycle for the average bike)
probably stiffer / stronger - no bolt on
slick looking sled

i want one.

Surly is distributed in Canada, Urbane Cyclist just to mention one. And there are several US destributors that regularly ship up here.

Now that I've got my trike set up for transportation/utility uses I
have no need for this new Surly.

However............

I'm damn glad to see Surly makes a bike like this that will encourage MORE bike uses
as transportation/utility vehicles in place of cars/trucks. With cheap pleantiful oil now
on the downside of Peak Oil Surly may find that they are are ahead of the curve in
demand for this type of bike. Might turn into a small gold mine.

Now if they'll just put fenders on them.....................

... or offer an XtraCycle Pugsley, with fenders.

You've got it backwards. You use the longtail to move the hummer around. :D

Beautiful! ...But where are the fender mounts? They should be on the production bike. If so, this will be perhaps the best utility bike frame available.

Why am I warming to this bike? It's ugly, but in a practical sort of way. Looks like the days of my heel hitting my briefcase are over.

I would have liked a bike with a level top tube and Dutch bike style.....and fenders, of course. But I hate flat bars.

So do I. (when it comes to city/on-road riding.) But the cleverchimp blog mentioned a speculated price ($820) for frame and fork, meaning you'd have to pick your own handlebar type and I'm sure you'd pick one you like.

Anyone else hope Surly would partner with S&S and offer the option of couplers with their bikes one day? Fenders?

I haven't had a car since I was 17...looks like I might get away with never having another

That couplers idea is a good one though it's almost too expensive. S&S is into supporting their custom cycle builders. it would add like 250 to a 350 LHT frame. I think we can only pray for some kind of Asian rip-off. I did correspond with them briefly over the Bike Friday segment, they are interested in doing something innovative in that general area, so maybe they could come up with their own couplings.
