20 years ago today, Cliff Burton, Metallica's basist, and in my opinion heavy metals greatest base player to date was killed in a freak bus accident while touring Switzerland.
This is a site about cliff, and it also has some Nintendo grade versions of his insturmentals that you can listen to. http://www.nunnie.com/cliff-burton.html
I love that shot. He used to improv something rotten whenever they played live.. especially on the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls.
It pains me to think of what else he might have accomplished. Not that his resume isn't impressive enough as it is, but let's face it - Cliff was easily the most musically talented member of Metallica, and after Master of Puppets the band lost some of its musical insightfulness, with the exception of 'One'.
It's a testiment to his ability that we still remember him after 20 years.

Jason Newsted...Rob Trujillo...have I missed anyone, aside from the infamous Bob Rock?

*cringe*
Nope. All are present and accounted for. Not so much of a revolving door as Jason Newsted was forced to be invisible.

yeah, you're right. i was thinking there was another bassist in there. a quick google search confirms otherwise. forgot how long newsted was with the band (14 years).

Yeah, I doubt Guns N Roses could have experienced the world domination they had if he survived. Metallica with Cliff was just plain better. I might be going over board with this one, but I also think he could have kept the grunge epidemic of the 90's at bay.
Actually, the first bassist in Metallica was Ron McGoveny. Thank you.
And as for Cliff's accomplishments... You'll notice he never played some of the more complex parts of Anaesthesia live...
I always like Jason. There was something... Robust about him and his playing. Not to discredit Rob, who is sufficiently powerful a personality to take the Cliff spot again.

I assumed we were only talking about post-Burtonian bassists, or I would have mentioned him.

Indeed. And the only idea that pains me more is that Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton and Mustaine couldn't play nice and get along with one another.
*sigh*

I hesitated to mention Bob Rock, as I don't consider St. Anger to be an actual Metallica album. If they wanted to "get back to their roots", they missed by a mile. What a steaming pile of garbage...and I actually paid for it.

Sorry. My bad.
