Southern California - What is a good pace up Newport Coast from PCH?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This last weekend a friend and I went riding down SART then turned south on PCH till we got to Newport Coast then we turned left to go up it. He is in much better shape me and this is my first time going up that hill. He went up the hill alot fasted than I did, he said about 12-13 mph. My question is what is a good speed to climb that hill, 12mph, 10mph ? I was'nt too far behind him, how fast do you kids go up that hill?

The one time I paid attention, I was struggling to get anywhere above 9.5 mph and that was from the Bonita side. When I did the PCH side, I was not feeling well and I think I was under 7 m.p.h.

No way...you guys were way ahead of me when we did it from the PCH side...you're faster than that! You have good climbing legs, in fact Tiff and I were discussing them at Peet's the other day. ;)

I had a head start.

You might be confusing me with Jason.

When I ride with misterdna and Tak962, I think they do about 12 mph which is way too fast for me...I'm usually around 8 or so...but I'm a lot heftier than Voltman (he's dreamy).

Last time up Newport Coast, I was doing mid- to high-9's. That represents a pace that is a hard tempo effort, but not hard enough to hurt (not in that distance, anyway). If I only cared about Newport Coast and not about riding fast before or after, I'm guessing I might manage about 11 MPH. But that would really hurt.

I don't try to keep up with those guys, either. Well, sometimes I try. It hurts. And I still can't keep up even if I accept that it will hurt and try.

Currently I go up NPC between 11-13MPH and have a total time (corner of PCH to the little metal water control devices at the apex of the hill) of right around 9 minutes (8:56 is my personal best).

Extort does 13 MPH. And OC Roadie and Pico are even faster.

Oh dear... I'll never catch those guys.

You totally ignored the fact that Tiff and I were talking about your legs while we were sipping Scharffen Berger Mocha Fredo's.

Oh...and we all started out at the same time and you were waiting when Dave and I got up to the top...you're faster than me!

I don't think I'm much, if any faster. From bottom to top, I think 13mph is about the fastest I've done it. I'm sure I've chased guys a lot faster on the lower half and then backed off to around 10mph. This morning we climbed it at just over 10 mph, and that was considered mellow. Rather than watching my speed up that hill, I usually time myself from the bottom of Newport Coast Climb to the top of Vista Ridge (clock stops at the top of the second little hill, about 100 yards before the stop sign at Ridge Park). 17 minutes is about the best I can manage, that's about 900' and ~3 miles.

I'll have to try that because it gives me a reason to keep going after cresting NPC.

Thanks!

I am usually between 8 and 8.5mph. But huffing and puffing all the way.

I'd say a sustained pace of 12-13mph is pretty darn fast!

OK, so without even doing this Climb I can tell you I'd be doing it at around 6 .5 mph...OC is 2x faster than me, that's how I know...;-)

I ride NPC both ways alot. I am one of the "husky" ones and I ride 11mph from Bonita and 9-10 from PCH, it depends on how I feel. Vista Ridge is the "easy" way up the bonus round.

Hey Jaguar:D ! Howya doing? I haven't seen or heard from you for a long time. You'll have to get out with the Orange County Bike Forums crew for a group ride.

I usually keep around 12.5 mph going up Newport coast. When I turn on Vista Ridge, I cant do more then 7-8. A guy passed me on one occasion doing 13.5 up the Coast and I killed my self hanging on to his wheel.

Geez, some of you are too fast for an old guy like me. I wish Newport Coast existed when I was younger, I might have been able to keep up back then. :)

These days I try to stay at 11 MPH coming up from PCH but I invariably slow down to 9.5-10.0 MPH at times. For some reason I do better going up Vista Ridge. I can keep it between 7-8 MPH. Maybe it's because I only have a 39 X 23.

I know that I could go almost 12 MPH if I could lose 15 lbs. ;)
