Mountain Biking - Grip Shifters to Trigger

Hi folks!! This is my first post. I'm a noob so bear with me. I have been MTBing for about 2 years and my fist bike is a hardtail Trek 4300 with discs brakes. I love it and it has been through noobie hell and still holding its own. Great entry level bike. Now, on to my question...

Going against my better judgement, I bought my wife an inexpensive bike at the local sporting goods superstore. We didn't want to spend any more money in case she didn't like it...well, she likes it and now she doesn't like the grip shifters that those bikes come with.

I read a post here from Colema62 (here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=61437)) and he bought the same shifters I am looking at, Shimano STX-7, but he also hasn't been back here so I can't ask him if it worked out (disallowing email also). I really want to know that these will work before I buy them. They are here (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/SL407A04-Shimano+Stxalivio+Mc40+7+Speed.aspx) for $25. Her bike is a 7 speed "Schwinn" and this is the only 7 speed set I can find. She has Shimano derailers and SRAM grip shifters.

We can't really afford to buy her a nice bike right now and we don't want to buy another boat anchor from the superstore.

Thoughts, direction, any input would be appreciated.

Shimano makes a great rapid fire shifter/brake lever combo in 7 and 9 speed versions. Available at pretty much any bike shop for $30 - $40.

Well, I pulled the trigger...we'll know next week whether these work or not. I'll be sure to post an outcome in case anybody else decides they want to do this to their twist shifters. Also got her some cool salsa grips with chili peppers...cause she's hot.

The upgrade worked out great!

I had to move her brake levers to the outside and was a tad bit short on room for the new grips due to the rise in her handlebar (could only move the shifter's indicator housing in so far); grips were off by less than 1/4 inch. Everything lines up perfect and she loves them. They came with cables installed so they went on quickly.

It would have been nice to find a combo brake/shifter so I only needed room for one clamp on the handlebar. No luck finding the one that Elton mentioned.

Welcome to the forum! I'm still kinda a noob too, so no worries! I borrowed my friend's C-dale Jekyll last week and it had the grip shifter on it and I thought I would not like it on the trail, but I was wrong! They worked great and shifting multiple gears at a time was cool! I'm now thinking of converting my "new" C-dale with the same setup!:beer:

I just went from gripshifters to rapid fire trigger shifters also...going back to grip shifts shortly. I get alot of front derailler chain rub that I cant seem to adjust out but with the grip shifts you have more control :)
