Mountain Biking - back on the mtb, couple of dumb questions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've mostly been riding my roadie for the last couple of years but have decided to dust off my mountain bike now that it's cooling off. I've got an 03 Raliegh M50. It's cheap, weighs a ton but is good enough for what I'm going to be doing, riding mostly non-technical singletrack. (I think that's the right terminology anyway :p)

Anyway, couple of questions.

The fork has a couple of adjusters on top of it that I'm not sure how to operate. The bike's manual says nothing about them. Both sides have a little gague with a + and - indicator. I've ridden with them at both extremes and can't tell much, if any difference. Is it just a useless gimmick on a cheap fork (SR something or another) or are these supposed to do something? Should both sides be the same or is it some sort of bump/rebound setting?

The trail I ride on is heavily wooded and has some really tight spots that I keep smashing my fingers on. The obvious solution is to not hit the trees, but would bar ends help here? I think they would but I'm also afraid they could get hooked on something and cause a much worse crash. Are these designed to protect your hands or just give you something else to hold onto?

these are probably the preload adjustors...inexpensive forks rarely have rebound adjustment...depending on the travel, set the preload so that the fork compresses a bit when you sit on the bike...usually about a half inch, a bit less if its a short travel fork (50mm)

bar ends are designed to help you to get more weight over your front wheel on tough climbs and can do serious damage if you endo or catch them on a tree. I usually wear gloves with pads on the fingers when on tight singletrack or in root and rock gardens

welcome back:)
