View Full Version : Best headphones?

Has anybody done comparisons between headphones? I want a pair that can work:

1. With my laptop when I want to listen to music
2. With my iPod when I want to listen to music
3. With my living room receiver when I want to listen to music
4. With the console at my local radio station when I do my Saturday program

COMFORT is my primary consideration, followed by sound quality. Obviously, any 1/8" jack headphone will work fine and a 1/4" adapter will allow use with the living room receiver and the radio station.

Have any of youse gals or guys done comparison reviews or know of a good online review source?

Thanks!

Sony MDR-7506

I've used these daily for work for almost 10 years, they are still a standard and not that spendy.

Hi Ernesto - Thanks for the recommendation - how comfy are the Sonys after an hour or two? I've found that light, low pressure phones (while not having the ultimate bass) are most comfortable...

they are much smaller and lighter than they look, they are really designed to be worn for hours. I've tried a variety of Sennheisers, Beyers, Fostex and others but I keep coming back to these.

Got a price range in mind? If the sky's the limit, there's a lot of great choices. How about the new Grado GS1000?

I've owned Grados and find them profoundly uncomfortable. Further, I was NOT impressed with the sound. The most comfortable phones I own are lightweight Sonys that fit on top of the ear - not around it. I've also tried earbuds, but find their sound quality lacking.

For price, cheaper is better because I just dumped $500 on a 500GB external HD and an 8GB i-Pod. I'd go up to $200 if the sound and comfort are significantly better than what I've already got.

For sub-$200, I like Sennheiser. Comfortable, good sound, versatile, well-made. I had a nice pair (I don't recall the model #), but I lost them in a freak basement flood a couple of years ago. I lost my PSB speakers at the same time. A real bummer.

Presently, I'm using cheap Yamahas. Not bad, but you get what you pay for with them.
