Okay, please bear with me, here... Most of my tech work involves MTB's and road bikes. The last BMX I had was in the '80s and the technology has changed.
My roomate has a BMX with a plate system to allow the front fork/steerer to spin freely. However, the cables seem to pop out of the plates while she's riding (thus leaving her with no brakes )
Does this just need adjustment, or modification? Would it help if I posted a picture of the parts I'm refering to?

it just needs a tune up. the cables probably stretched. soo tighten them. and use the barrel adjusters to.

Excellent. I can definately handle that. She says she's tightened them already, but then again she's not too overall bike-savvy when it comes to the actual hardware so I'll take a closer look.
If that doesn't do the trick, I'll snap some pics and maybe someone can tell me what the problem is from those. It's certainly a very nifty design they've come up with to allow the bars full spin with cable brakes.
Its called gyro by the way
Post pics if you have trouble, we can probly help you more...

Does can creek make good stuff for mtb?
Because i killed their bmx headset.
Like both the top and bottom cups craked and the bearings fell out.

all that is is a starbolt and top cap
A hollow bolt and cap. We didn't have these when I was a kid. Or disc brakes. Or even brakes that worked.
i dont think they had bikes in the stoneage besides that one seat made out of rock
I traded in my dinosaur on the first Mongoose. The dinosaur weighed less.
Haha. Expat, you are one silly little moderator.

Little?
you want to find out whether it's a dual cable or splitter cable set up too. dua cables can be trickier to set up as you have to balance the springs to stop the gyro flopping about. genewrally speaking you want the gyro plate as low as possible whilst still retaining tension.
what a badass.
The missus and I were having a contest to see who could get the most cross-eyed. I think I sprained something.
lets see a pic of the daughter now
